Get Your Score! Tips to Strategize your Move into JEE Advanced

The method of scoring well in the examination is a two-way process – firstly, you need to study well and secondly, you need to strategize properly. While you need to prepare and study from the syllabus of JEE Main, you should also allot some time to strategize for the examination to ensure your pass to JEE Advanced. In this article, we will focus on some pointers which may be useful while attempting the JEE Main 2018 examination and which will boost your chances for JEE Advanced 2018. We will be checking the scoring strategy category wise since the cutoff scores are different for each.

General Category

Total Cutoff Marks = 81

Section Wise Qualifying Marks = 81/3 = 27

No. of Questions to be Correctly Answered in Each Section = 27/4 = 6.75 or 7 Questions

Total Questions to be Correctly Answered in JEE Main Paper I = 21 Questions

According to the previous year, the cutoff score for General category is 81 marks. JEE Main Paper I consists of 3 sections – Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Therefore, it means that you will have secure 27 marks in each section to qualify for JEE Advanced. Since each question is worth 4 marks, it is essential for you to get 7 questions correct in each section. So in total, if you belong to the General category, you will have to answer 7 questions in each section correctly which means overall 21 questions have to be correctly answered in the entire JEE Main Paper I.

You should remember that there is negative marking for each wrong answer so just answer those questions which you are confident in. Since each section consists of 30 questions, you can concentrate on some particular topics which are likely to be asked in the examination. Concentrating on such topics will present you more chances to secure correct responses for 7 questions each in the 3 sections. This will enable you to secure the perfect required score to advance ahead for JEE Advanced examination.

OBC – NCL Category

Total Cutoff Marks = 49

Section Wise Qualifying Marks = 49/3 = 16.33 or 17

No. of Questions to be Correctly Answered in Each Section = 17/4 = 4.25 or 5 Questions

Total Questions to be Correctly Answered in JEE Main Paper I = 15 Questions

If you belong to the OBC – NCL category, the cutoff score that has to be secured for JEE Advanced is 49 marks. Accordingly, in each section, you will have to score 17 marks. As known from the information provided above, each question is worth 4 marks, therefore, to qualify for the JEE Advanced exam, you will have to answer 5 questions correctly from each section. This brings the total questions to be correctly answered to 15 questions. By answering 15 questions correctly, you will be securing more than the cutoff marks, which is good, however, if you wish to score near the cutoff marks then you will have to answer just 13 questions correctly overall in JEE Main Paper I.

Scheduled Caste (SC) Category

Total Cutoff Marks = 32

Section Wise Qualifying Marks = 32/3 = 10.66 or 11

No. of Questions to be Correctly Answered in Each Section = 11/4 = 2.75 or 3 Questions

Total Questions to be Correctly Answered in JEE Main Paper I = 9 Questions

Scheduled Caste (SC) category are required to secure 32 marks to qualify for JEE Advanced. Since the paper is divided into 3 sections, you will have to secure 11 marks in each section. Therefore, you will have to answer 3 questions correctly each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics section. The total questions to be answered correctly in the JEE Main examination is 9.

Scheduled Tribe (ST) Category

Total Cutoff Marks = 27

Section Wise Qualifying Marks = 27/3 = 9

No. of Questions to be Correctly Answered in Each Section = 9/4 = 2.25 or 3 Questions

Total Questions to be Correctly Answered in JEE Main Paper I = 9 Questions

The marks to be secured for Scheduled Tribe category is lesser than the above-mentioned categories. If you belong to this category, then you will be required to score 27 marks to be qualified for JEE Advanced. Automatically, this refers to the fact that you will have to ensure that at least 9 marks is secured in each of the three sections. Since 4 marks are allotted for each question, try to correctly answer 3 questions in each section to ensure your success. However, if you manage to correctly answer 7 questions overall in JEE Main Paper I, you will be able to score exactly the cutoff needed to qualify for the next round.

Persons with Disability (PwD) Category

The PwD category has the lowest score to be secured in order to qualify for JEE Advanced examination. If you belong to this category, you will be termed eligible for JEE Advanced even if you answer just one question, out of the total 90 questions, correctly.

The key to qualifying JEE Advanced 2018 examination is to score the cutoff marks or above according to the category you belong it. By creating a plan and executing it while attempting JEE Main 2018 exam, you will be able to grab the chance for admissions into IITs. It is very important to know how to score qualifying marks for JEE Advanced since it provides a vital information to the preparation process of all IIT aspirants. Hopefully, this article has also succeeded in boosting your knowledge regarding the cutoff scores needed to advance into the national level examination of JEE Advanced.

_Abhishek_Vatsya Student Expert 10th Dec, 2019
Hey!There
It is really tough to make prediction about minimum score in any specific category that can fetch you seat in top IITs as in last two years cuttoff has changed drastically. This year cuttoff was changed dramatically as paper was tough.JEE ADVANCE question setter keep changing level of questions each year,so it's really tough to make any prediction before examination.Despite all this, you can target 130+ for having seat in IITs with SC category that's what previous year trends says..
I hope this helps..

Is there anyway to enter in iit if i couldnt qualify jee advance exam??

Aditi Amrendra Student Expert 9th Dec, 2019
Hello,

If you want to do B.tech then unfortunately you cant because jee advance is the inky way.But if you want to do other courses in IITs like B.Sc, Designing, Management etc then exams like IIT JAM, CAT, UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design), CEED(Common Entrance Exam for Design) , HSEE (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam) can help you to get in IITs.

I hope this helps.
