India has been at the forefront of engineering and technology. However since the early 1990s with the liberalisation of the trade economy in the country and the aspirations of the American Dream there has been a steady rise in the number of engineers our country is producing every year. Globally the 90s decade marks the beginning of the digitised world. With western companies hiring scores of skilled engineers, it was only a matter of time that engineering became the much sought after qualification by Indian students.

In India, academics is a family subject, parents and relatives play an important role in shaping how and where the child completes their undergraduate and graduate studies. Even today a child’s journey through Class 8 to Class 12 is crafted by what they are good at. If your child has a dominant left brain, meaning is better at maths and science then the option is clear engineering or medicine. While medicine is for those students who have a higher aptitude in life sciences, anatomy and human studies, engineering is for those who show an aptitude for physics, numerals and experiments. This of course can be further divided into various branches of engineering.
This brings us to the question – Why do so many students opt for the coveted engineering degree? The answer lies in fact that though a career in medicine is lucrative at the beginning, the gap between higher salaries narrows as engineers progress in their careers. Higher salaries is equal to a better standard of living, and hence the best possible option.

For
JEE Main
and
JEE Advanced
, the cut-offs are lower for ST category students. Here is a simple idea based on recent trends:
JEE Main qualification for ST
: Around
50–60 marks
is usually enough to qualify for JEE Advanced.
JEE Advanced qualification for ST
: You just need to clear the JEE Main cut-off, then appear for Advanced.
To get
good NITs or IITs
, you will need higher marks.
For
NITs
(Hyderabad or good branches), try for
120+ marks in JEE Main
.
For
IITs
, even with ST quota, you should aim for at least
80–100+ marks in JEE Advanced
for decent branches.
Since you are from
ST category
and
Hyderabad
, you don’t need 300 marks in JEE Main. Try to score as high as possible to get better branches, but even moderate marks can qualify you.
