As mentioned in the brochure, the state of eligibility proof in JoSAA 2026 is a document necessary to cross check the applicant's state code of eligibility. It is based on the state from which the candidate first appeared for Class 12 exam. Meaning, the JoSAA 2026 state code of eligibility is not the same as the state of Domicile, residence, or place of birth.
For instance, if a candidate resides in Andhra Pradesh or was born in Andhra Pradesh, however, they have appeared for the class 10+2 exam in any other state, say, Telangana. Then, their state code of eligibility will be Telangana.
Here are some of the points that must be kept in mind-
The state of eligibility in JoSAA 2026 is not native place or place of residence or birth.
It is simply the state where the class 12th exam was given.
Note that the state where the class 12th examination was taken for the first time will be considered. The place where the improvement exams is not the state of eligibility.
For Indian nationals passing the 12th class or its equivalent abroad, their state of eligibility is the permanent address in India as per the passport.
The state code of eligibility of OCI/PIO who appeared for class 12th exam in India, is the state where they took the exam.
For those OCI/PIO who appeared for class 12th exam abroad, they will not be eligible for Home State quota. They can get admission to NIT+ system under the Other State quota.
