Careers360: Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decide to study engineering? Which branch would you be interested in? Any reason?
Suraj: I want to study engineering because of my interest in Mathematics. I was in class X when I decided that I will pursue engineering in my upcoming years of education. I want to study Computer Science engineering from IIT Bombay.
Careers360: When did you start your JEE Advanced preparation? Tell us something about your preparation strategy and daily routine for JEE Advanced?
Suraj: I started my preparation for JEE Advanced in class XI. I used to study 11-12 hours a day. I focussed more on practising Physics and Mathematics during my preparation.
Careers360: How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?
Suraj: I didn't prepare separately for both the exams. The preparation for JEE Main and Advanced was a simultaneous process with the fact that for JEE Advanced, one needs more conceptual clarity and deeper understanding of the topics.
Careers360: Since there was just a month after the JEE Main, elaborate on your preparation strategy?
Suraj: I revised all my JEE Advanced 2017 syllabus thoroughly. It was only practice and revision that I followed when the JEE Advanced exam was a month away.
Careers360: Did you take coaching for JEE and if yes from where? What are the benefits of coaching according to you?
Suraj: Yes, I did my coaching from Vibrant academy, Kota. The classes that I took there actually helped me a lot by clearing all my doubts and aiding me to practise a lot. We used to have regular tests in our coaching classes that helped.
Careers360: Mock tests and sample papers – how extensively did you practise with the help of these? Do you think practising from the previous year papers help and how?
Suraj: I solved all the question papers right from 2000 to 2016. Yes, practising question papers do help a lot by reducing your mistakes while increasing your speed and accuracy.
Careers360: Are there any special books that you feel have helped with your JEE Advanced preparation?
Suraj: I referred to some books which were suggested by my coaching centre. For Physics, I studied from Irodov. For Mathematics, I referred to Advanced problems in JEE and for Chemistry, I referred to books from Balaji publications.
Careers360: Did you face any problem during the JEE Advanced examination? Which subject was the easiest and which was the toughest in JEE Advanced? What do you think is a tough thing to manage during the JEE Advanced exam?
Suraj: No, not as such. For me, Mathematics was the easiest while Physics and Physical Chemistry were the toughest. I think it is important to go into the exam hall with all concentration as this helps manage all tough things and eliminates fear.
Careers360: The answer keys revealed bonus marks for 5 questions. Did you answer those questions? What was your reaction while answering them and after the answer key announced the bonus marks?
Suraj: The bonus marks were of no use to me as I attempted all the questions.
Careers360: What do you think are the key factors behind your stupendous success in JEE Advanced?
Suraj: My teachers, my parents are my pillars of support. My habit of regular practice was one of the key factors that helped me achieve my rank.
Careers360: How did you de-stress yourself during the preparation? What are your hobbies? How often could you pursue them?
Suraj: I never felt any stress because I enjoyed studying.
Careers360: Who is your ideal or biggest inspiration in life and why?
Suraj: My father is my ideal because he has always encouraged me by telling me that nothing is impossible. He is my motivation to succeed in life.
Careers360: You know you are an inspiration to thousands of students across the country. Do you have any message for future aspirants on tackling the JEE Advanced exam?
Suraj: I would say that one must concentrate while studying. It's not the number of hours that you are giving while studying for the exam; it's the concentration with which you study that will make a difference. I also want to add that hard work pays off so never take a back seat when it comes to working hard.
