Ask your question related to NIT Calicut

Hello aspirant!

Thanks for sharing your details.

Unfortunately, for General category candidates, the minimum eligibility for admission into NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JEE Mains is 75% marks in Class 12 or being in the top 20 percentile of your board (whichever is lower).
Since you have 74%, you fall just short of the 75% rule. However, if your board’s top 20 percentile cutoff is lower than 74%, you might still be eligible. You'll need to check the CBSE/State Board top 20 percentile cutoff for 2024 or 2025, once it’s published.

With 86.4 percentile, your CRL rank would be around 1.3 to 1.5 lakh, approximately. For NIT Calicut, being a well-ranked and in-demand NIT, the cutoff for General category students is usually much higher (percentiles above 97 for CSE and above 92–95 even for lower branches like Production or Civil). So, with your percentile, it’s very unlikely to get NIT Calicut, especially in general category.

So to conclude:

  • You may not be eligible for NITs unless the top 20 percentile rule works in your favor.

  • Even if eligible, your chances at NIT Calicut are very low with this percentile.

  • You should explore other options like private colleges that accept JEE scores, state counselling, or universities like Shiv Nadar, UPES, or Amrita, where your score might still help.

All the best!

Hello Mr. Bini,

Considering your son's rank in JEE Main (3715 in General category, Maharashtra), here below is the categorization that might help you narrow down the options:

CSE in NIT Calicut (or Other NITs):

  • CSE is a very popular branch with lots of placement opportunities if your son is looking at top NITs like Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, and Calicut he won't go wrong with CSE.
  • If your son likes coding, software and tech then CSE in NIT is a great option.
  • The NITs that maintain a good CSE department and good placement are: Trichy, Warangal and Surathkal.

ECE in IIIT Hyderabad:

  • IIIT-Hyderabad is a good institute with excellent academic and research environment particularly for ECE and other related interdisciplinary streams, particularly in the area of AI/ML, VLSI.
  • The placement of IIIT-Hyderabad is excellent because other than IITs, IIIT-H students have the best placement options, particularly for research oriented/product based roles.
  • If your son likes a research driven curriculum and he may think of higher studies or work in tech heavy roles, IIIT-H ECE is arguably the best choice of all options.

ECE in NIT Warangal/Surathkal/Trichy/Rourkela:

  • These are very good NITs with good ECE department and strong industry partnerships.
  • The placement is good, but is not as strong compared to CSE branches or IIIT-Hyderabad ECE.

If the emphasis is on core tech roles and software engineering, get him a place in CSE at a top NIT (ideally Trichy, Warangal, or Surathkal). If there is a willingness to accept a comprehensive, research-based academic program, with future scope in core tech, AI or higher studies, then ECE at IIIT Hyderabad could be the best long term option. Do not opt for lower-tier NITs if you can get him into one of these higher tier institutes.

It's difficult to say definitively whether a 94.4148 percentile in JEE Main, with home state, OBC, and female quota, will guarantee a BTech Physics seat at NIT Calicut. While a 94 percentile is a good score, it's not a guarantee of admission to a specific program at a specific NIT.

The final cutoff ranks and percentiles for NIT Calicut vary from year to year and are influenced by factors like the overall JEE Main performance, the number of applicants, and the number of seats available.

Your percentile needs to be converted to a rank, which is what is used for seat allotment during the JoSAA counselling process.

Home state quotas can significantly impact your chances, as seats are reserved for students from the state where the NIT is located.

These quotas further influence seat allocation, and the impact on a program like BTech Physics will depend on the specific number of reserved seats and the overall demand for that program.

I suggest you to use JEE predictor tool which will help you to know your chances in nit Calicut .

Based on the JEE Main 2024 cutoff data for NIT Calicut, a 78 percentile score may not be sufficient for admission into most B.Tech programs, even under the SC female category.

Closing ranks for SC female candidates in 2024:

- Computer Science and Engineering (CSE): 809 (Other State quota)

- Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE): 3551

- Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE): 4880

- Mechanical Engineering: 7097

- Civil Engineering: 11567

- Chemical Engineering: 9565

- Bio Technology: 11012

- Production Engineering: 11853

These ranks are All India Ranks (AIR). A 78 percentile typically translates to an AIR of around 180,000 to 200,000, which is higher (worse) than the required closing ranks.

Conclusion: It's unlikely that you’ll get a seat in NIT Calicut with 78 percentile under SC female category in 2025.

Recommendations:

- Explore other NITs with higher closing ranks.

- Look into state-level colleges with SC reservations.

- Participate in CSAB special rounds, which often have relaxed cutoffs.

- Consider alternative exams like COMEDK or state CETs.

Hello aspirant,

With 86.45 percentile in JEE Main 2025 and SC category , your expected rank would be around 55,000–60,000 (CRL) and 4,000–5,000 (SC rank) .

For NIT Calicut (CS branch) , the SC category closing rank in previous years was around 1,500–2,000 . Since your SC rank might be above 4,000 , getting CSE at NIT Calicut seems difficult . However, you may get other branches like Civil, Chemical, or Mechanical .

Advice : Wait for official cutoffs, check CS in newer NITs or other top GFTIs.

I would recommend you to use JEE Mains College Predictor Tool by Careers360 to get the list of possible colleges you can get with your rank.

Hello

If you are looking to rejoin a discontinued course or attend college just for exams , here's some steps you can consider :

1. Contact the College Administration : Reach out to the administration or registrar's office of the college where you were enrolled. They will provide specific information on re-admission policies, specially for students who have discontinued.

2. Re-admission Policy : Many colleges have a re-admission process but it may vary depending on how long you've been away. Since you completed your 12th in 2016 and it's been a few years , you may need to submit additional documents or fulfill certain conditions.

3. Examination-Only Option : Some universities offer external or private candidate options where students can study independently and appear only for exams. Confirm if your institution allows this.

4. Credits and Course Continuation : If you are looking to continue the same course , ask about credit transfers or if you need to retake certain subjects. You may also need to check if the syllabus has changed.

5. Documentation : Be ready with necessary documents like your previous academic records, identification proof and any official communication related to your discontinuation.

6. Alternative Options : If rejoining the same college isn't feasible, you can consider transferring to another institution or enrolling in distance learning programs.

hope this helps you .

In order to get admission to NIT Calicut College for a Bachelor of Planning program, it is required to know the previous year's JEE Mains cutoff ranks; they provide a benchmark for the score. However, the specific cutoff ranks of the B.Planning program are not available, but we can understand the competitive nature of the admission by understanding the cutoffs of other programs like B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture).

The previous year, the cutoff of B.Arch was:

opening rank: 68

closing rank: 271.

Please note that every year the cutoffs are decided based on the number of applicants, seat availability, and overall performance of the applicants.
