The data shows a total of 863 students admitted across the 15 institutes, of which 631 students registered for placements and 491 offers accepted, resulting in a placement rate of 77.81%. However, the most alarming is that only 56.89% of students got placed when we consider it from the total student intake.
Additionally, the data reveals a notable drop-off between intake and registration, with nearly 27% of the total intake not participating in placements.

Across the 8 IITs and 7 NITS, the placement rate stood at 77.81%. But when considering it from the total intake, the placement rate is 56.89%. While the gross placement rate relative to intake is lower that is more concerning, the placement rate of registered candidates combined with a decent average CTC of Rs 10.65 LPA indicates a good job prospects for graduates in this field.

The Material Science and Metallurgy Engineering placement data across 8 IITs shows a total intake of 357. Only 241 students registered for placements and 161 offers were accepted, resulting in a placement rate of 66.89%. The overall average CTC stood at Rs 13.1 LPA.
However, the data reveals a notable drop-off between intake and registration, with 67.50% original intake not sitting for placements.
| Institute Name | Intake (2021-22) | Students Registered for Placements (2024-25) | Offers Accepted (2024-25) | Placement % (Registered) | Placement % (Intake) | Max CTC | Average CTC |

IIT Dhanbad | 37 | 30 | 27 | 90.00% | 72.97% | 122.00 | 15.93 |
IIT Roorkee | 80 | 47 | 19 | 40.43% | 23.75% | - | - |
The data in table above shows IIT Dhanbad recorded the highest placement rate of 90% relative to registered students. But when we take into consideration the actual intake, the placement rate stood at nearly 73%. The institute also recorded the maximum CTC of Rs 122 LPA, with an average CTC of Rs 15.93 LPA.
On the other hand, IIT Ropar, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Roorkee recorded lower conversion rates, with 50%, 56%, and 40.43%, respectively. With the decent overall average CTC for Material Science and Metallurgy placements at IITs, IIT Kanpur has the highest average CTC of Rs 16.60 LPA.
Observation: The data reveals that 76.25% of IIT Roorkee students, from the total intake, did not sit for placements or may not participate in the placement drive. This becomes crucial for aspiring students to look at the placement rate based on the actual student intake, rather than registered students.

The Material Science and Metallurgy Engineering Placement data at 7 NITs shows a total intake of 506, of which 390 students registered for placements and 330 students accepted offers. This reveals the Material Science and Metallurgy placement rate at NITs stood at 84.62% (registered). When considering the intake, the actual placement rate is 65.22%.
The overall maximum CTC has been Rs 19.70 LPA, with an overall average CTC of Rs Rs 8.89 LPA.

NIT Durgapur | 75 | 57 | 51 | 89.47% | 68.00% | 13.60 | 7.80 |
NIT Rourkela | 74 | 71 | 57 | 80.28% | 77.03% | 31.00 | 10.38 |
NIT Hamirpur | 40 | 25 | 25 | 100.00% | 62.50% | 10.00 | 7.05 |

VNIT Nagpur | 115 | 80 | 69 | 86.25% | 60.00% | 14.10 | 8.01 |
MNIT Jaipur | 114 | 97 | 78 | 80.41% | 68.42% | 24.00 | 9.52 |
NIT Hamirpur recorded the 100% placement rate, where 25 out of 25 registered students got placed, with an average CTC of Rs 7.05 LPA. NIT Durgapur has a placement rate of 89.47%, followed by VNIT Nagpur (86.25%), NIT Surathkal (84.44%), MNIT Jaipur (80.41%), and NIT Rourkela (80.28%).
Observation: The data reveals low student participation in Material Science and Metallurgy Engineering placements at NIT Calicut, with only half of the cohort size (15 out of 30) sat for placements if we take it from the total students intake.

Institutes always claim higher placement percentages but the real picture gets diluted, because they claim based on the number of students who registered for placements, rather than the total student intake.
Prospective students should always look at the number of students placed based on the total intake. This gives the actual placement percentage because many students opt out for placements while many do not participate due to various reasons like higher education or better job prospects.
Material Science and Metallurgy Engineering is one popular engineering branch and often compared with other branches. The following table highlights the comparison between Material Science and Metallurgy Engineering and top branches like Computer Science Engineering (CSE).
