The data in table above shows IIT Dhanbad recorded the highest placement rate of 90% relative to registered students. But when we take into consideration the actual intake, the placement rate stood at nearly 73%. The institute also recorded the maximum CTC of Rs 122 LPA, with an average CTC of Rs 15.93 LPA.

On the other hand, IIT Ropar, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Roorkee recorded lower conversion rates, with 50%, 56%, and 40.43%, respectively. With the decent overall average CTC for Material Science and Metallurgy placements at IITs, IIT Kanpur has the highest average CTC of Rs 16.60 LPA.

Observation: The data reveals that 76.25% of IIT Roorkee students, from the total intake, did not sit for placements or may not participate in the placement drive. This becomes crucial for aspiring students to look at the placement rate based on the actual student intake, rather than registered students.

Why Does Actual Placement Data Differ?

Institutes always claim higher placement percentages but the real picture gets diluted, because they claim based on the number of students who registered for placements, rather than the total student intake.

Prospective students should always look at the number of students placed based on the total intake. This gives the actual placement percentage because many students opt out for placements while many do not participate due to various reasons like higher education or better job prospects.

Material Science & Metallurgy Engineering vs. Top Branch (like CSE)
