MSK Manohar: I scored 319 marks out of 360 in JEE Advanced 2018. I got an All India Rank of 5 in the exam and rank 1 in OBC category. My rank in JEE Main 2018 is 59.

Careers360: Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decide to study engineering? Which branch would you be interested in? Any reason?

MSK Manohar: I don’t have any specific reason but it's my interest that lead me to engineering. I remember deciding in class IX that I am interested in CSE. I also like Electronics, I don’t have reasons for liking them, may be it's the nature of subjects.

Careers360: JEE Advanced went online this year. What is your opinion about it? Did it change your preparation strategy for the exam?

MSK Manohar: I felt happy about JEE Advanced being conducted in online mode because there was no need to bubble the answers and we could also change our responses before submission. I did not change my preparation strategy much except for taking the online tests like AITS which helped me a lot.

Careers360: When did you start your JEE Advanced preparation? Tell us something about your preparation strategy and daily routine for JEE Advanced?

MSK Manohar: I started my JEE Advanced preparation in the 1st year. It doesn’t matter how much time you study it’s the efficiency that matters more. I used to focus on my weak areas but also revise my strengths.

Careers360: How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?

MSK Manohar: The way of preparation is almost the same but it was more effective and planned for JEE Advanced. I followed NCERT books when JEE Main exam was near; I covered all my weak areas once again before Advanced. I prepared in offline mode for JEE Main while both online & offline for JEE Advanced.

Careers360: Since there was just a month after the JEE Main, elaborate on your preparation strategy?

MSK Manohar: I just revised all the topics specifically my weak areas. I used to take numerous tests which showed me what should be done to raise the bar and did accordingly. I rectified my problem of committing silly mistakes to a great extent by following it.

Careers360: Did you take coaching for JEE and if yes from where? What are the benefits of coaching according to you?

MSK Manohar: Yes. I took coaching for JEE from FIITJEE, Vijayawada. The coaching acted like a good handle for a sharp axe. The FIITJEE team prepared me to tackle any situation during the examination and solve any kind of questions.

Careers360: Mock tests and sample papers – how extensively did you practise with the help of these? Do you think practising from the previous year papers help and how?

MSK Manohar: In the pre-revision schedule for the first one and a half year, we used to have two tests a week. In the last half, the number of tests increased and we practised archives which helped to have an idea regarding the way questions are being asked.

Careers360: Are there any special books that you feel have helped with your JEE Advanced preparation?

MSK Manohar: Yes. I want to specifically mention 'Solomons for Organic Chemistry' which helped me a lot in learning the concepts and 'MS Chowhan Advanced problems' which helped me practice questions.

Careers360: Did you face any problem during the JEE Advanced examination? Which subject was the easiest and which was the toughest in JEE Advanced? What do you think is a tough thing to manage during the JEE Advanced exam?

MSK Manohar: I did not face any big problem except scrolling for which I need to go to the scroll bar and drag it. I felt Physics as the easiest and Mathematics as the toughest subject. The tough things to manage during exam are time and error minimisation.

Careers360: What is the main difference between both the two papers in JEE Advanced?

MSK Manohar: The second paper was relatively tough and lengthy, especially Mathematics section. I was left with around 20 minutes for verification in Paper-I but with no time in Paper-II.

Careers360: Did you face any technical glitches during the exam? What is your opinion on the way the exam was conducted?

MSK Manohar: No. I did not face any technical glitches. The exam was conducted in a fair way.

Careers360: What do you think are the key factors behind your stupendous success in JEE Advanced?

MSK Manohar: Confidence, environmental motivation at FIITJEE Vijaywada and not giving up attitude at any moment were the factors that helped me make it through the exam.

Careers360: How did you de-stress yourself during the preparation? What are your hobbies? How often could you pursue them?

MSK Manohar: I didn't feel stress during my preparation, though, I used to play chess, carom, cricket and some other games whenever I got free time. I used to watch movies on weekends.

Careers360: Who is your ideal or biggest inspiration in life and why?

MSK Manohar: APJ Abdul Kalam is my biggest inspiration in life. I like all his speeches and the way he used to react to situations.

Careers360: You know you are an inspiration to thousands of students across the country. Do you have any message for future aspirants on tackling the JEE Advanced exam?

MSK Manohar: I remember being told this by a friend of mine Abhigna, “ Ishtapadi cheste kashtamaina panaina sare nashtam lekunda spashtamaina falitamostundi.” This translates to “If you like whatever you do, then the toughest job will give clear results in your favour.”  I wish all the best to all.

Sir I got 96.5 percentile in JEE jan 2020 i wish to improve my rank in April session .I got a chance in leading coaching centre for JEE advance .I am confused which is I focused JEE main or Advance

Subhodeep Biswas 28th Jan, 2020
Hey there hope you're doing well
Dear aspirant, congratulation on scoring a good percentile in the JEE MAIN examination. According to your percentile score in JEE MAIN your expected rank is about 30,415. With this rank you're likely to get into NITs. But it's good as you want to improve in your percentile and rank. As far as preparation is concerned since you have secured a decent rank in JEE MAIN a little effort would take you under 10k rank. For JEE ADVANCED you need to focus on analytical questions; problems that require in depth knowledge of subject matter. Joiningof coaching benefits you as they create a good competitive environment. Give full length test series a d practise more no. Of questions. Also absolve previous year JEE MAIN + ADVANCED problems.
Thank you hope this helps you!

Shudhanshu Gupta Student Expert 28th Jan, 2020
It is quite difficult to tell you the latest cutoff percentile to be qualified JEE mains for JEE advanced but yes by analysing the previous year records I can tell you that how much percentile probably you basically need to have, So for general category you need to have at least 85 percentile.
And remember the above percentile is on the basis of previous year record it may fluctuate with some factors.
Best of luck.
