Is NTA Score and Percentile Same? Score vs Percentile

Is NTA Score and Percentile Same: Yes, the NTA score and percentile are the same. JEE Main aspirants and education experts use these two different terms for the same score or percentile. The authority releases the JEE Main candidates' scores in the form of a percentile which is also called the NTA score. The JEE Main 2026 exam pattern is for a total of 300 marks. As there are a huge number of JEE Main candidates and the competition is very high, the authority releases the JEE Main students' results in the form of a score out of 100 which is percentile. This percentile will be 7 decimal. The percentile score gives the accurate performance and merit of the JEE Main aspirant who appeared for the exam. The NTA score or percentile is obtained by using a normalisation formula. Candidates raw score, number of students attempted exam in the shift will be used while calculating the Percentile score. The JEE Main 2026 result has been published on February 16, 2026.

What is Percentile?

Percentile on the other hand is a statistical term used to denote how a candidate has performed in the charts of other candidates. It is a proportion of candidates who have received a lower score or have received an equal score to a specific score. The percentile does not show the actual marks that a candidate has attained but indicates the ranking of a candidate to the rest.

The formula for calculating percentile is

Percentile = Number of candidates with a score less than or equal to the candidate’s score/ Total number of candidates x 100.

What is the NTA Score?

The NTA score is a mathematical mark of the performance of the candidate during the JEE Main exam. It is computed in respect to the raw marks of the student in the examination. The NTA score cannot be equated with raw marks that have been achieved since it is normalized to the extent that it gives fairness to the evaluation process. The NTA score determines the performance of the candidates in the various sessions of the JEE Main exam since the level of difficulty of the test might be different in each session.

Why Are NTA Scores and Percentiles Important?

The NTA score and the percentile have a major role in the JEE Main examination but they are used to serve different purposes. NTA score, which is an absolute performance of a candidate in the exam, is used to assess the performance of a candidate in the exam and the percentile is used to determine the position of the candidate among other candidates.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is NTA score marks or percentiles?
A:

For normalization between sections, NTA will be done using the percentile equivalence. Percentile Scores: Percentile scores are the scores that are determined by the relative performance of all those that appear in the examination. The marks that are obtained are basically converted to a scale between 100 and 0 between two sessions of the examinees.

Q: How to convert NTA JEE Main marks into percentile?
A:

NTA Percentile = 100 × The number of candidates in the session with a raw score that does not exceed that of yours.

In that session, the number of candidates was total. NTA Percentile= On that session, the number of candidates was total. 100X The number of candidates in the session who scored at least as lowly on a raw score as yourself.
