Careers360: Tell us something about yourself. Which board have you studied under? Which school have you studied in?

Shubham Gupta: I have completed my studies from Cambridge Court High School, Jaipur.

Careers360: What is your score in JEE Advanced 2018? What is your all India rank and category rank? What was your JEE Main rank?

Shubham Gupta: I scored 305 in JEE Advanced 2018. My All India Rank in JEE Main was 109 and JEE Advanced is 17. My category rank in JEE Advanced was also 17.

Careers360: Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decided to study engineering? Which branch would you be interested in? Any reason?

Shubham Gupta: I always had interest in computer games. I admired my brother who is also studying CS and is always busy programming and coding. Being amazed by all this, I also want to pursue Computer Science. I wish to join IIT Bombay.

Careers360: JEE Advanced went online this year. What is your opinion about it? Did it change your preparation strategy for the exam?

Shubham Gupta: There was no harm in the online exam. I had enough practice because of the mock tests so I did not face any difficulty in the online mode.

Careers360: When did you start your JEE Advanced preparation? Tell us something about your preparation strategy and daily routine for JEE Advanced?

Shubham Gupta: I started my preparation when I was in class 9 by setting my goal to get admission into IIT. I started preparing even more seriously from class 11. I used to wake up early and start my preparation. I did not go to school frequently. I utilised that time in doing self study. Then, I used to go for evening coaching classes and later study at night as well.

Careers360: How was the preparation for JEE Advanced different from JEE Main?

Shubham Gupta: Preparation of JEE Main required a thorough revision of NCERT which helped in JEE Advanced also but JEE Advanced was more about the clarity of concepts. JEE Main comprises of straight forward questions while JEE Advanced has questions with an elevated difficulty.

Careers360: Since there was just a month after the JEE Main, elaborate on your preparation strategy?

Shubham Gupta: My target during that time was to revise everything that teachers taught in the 2 years. I made sure that the revision was completed so that no regret was left after the exam. I even gave tests which helped me a lot.

Careers360: Did you take coaching for JEE and if yes from where? What are the benefits of coaching according to you?

Shubham Gupta: I took coaching from Allen Career Institute, Jaipur. Coaching can be of great help as they provide a platform to give tests regularly to keep a check on your preparation. They help you know your strengths and weaknesses. Since JEE level is increasing, I think there is a need of additional guidance other than schools.

Careers360: Mock tests and sample papers – how extensively did you practise with the help of these? Do you think practising from the previous year papers help and how?

Shubham Gupta: Yes, I gave many tests and practised sample papers. Previous year question papers give you an idea about the types of questions asked.

Careers360: Are there any special books that you feel have helped with your JEE Advanced preparation?

Shubham Gupta: There were no specific book as such. I prepared according to the teacher’s guidance and studied from the books they referred.

Careers360: Did you face any problem during the JEE Advanced examination?  Which subject was the easiest and which was the toughest in JEE Advanced? What do you think is a tough thing to manage during the JEE Advanced exam?

Shubham Gupta: I did not face any problem as such. According to me, Physics was the easiest. I found Maths to be a bit difficult. I lost my marks in Maths.

Careers360: What is the main difference between both the two papers in JEE Advanced?

Shubham Gupta: I found Maths to be difficult in the second paper of JEE Advanced.

Careers360: Did you face any technical glitches during the exam? What is your opinion on the way the exam was conducted?

Shubham Gupta: No, I did not face any difficulty as there was no technical problem in my centre. I was comfortable with the online mode of the exam.

Careers360: What do you think are the key factors behind your stupendous success in JEE Advanced?

Shubham Gupta: I want to give credits to regular hard work. Consistency is the key factor behind my success as I never took a break from studies. I revised everything I learnt in classes the same day itself. Blind faith in teachers helped me reach so far.

Careers360:  How did you de-stress yourself during the preparation? What are your hobbies? How often could you pursue them?

Shubham Gupta: I used to spend time with my mother to stay away from stress. I used to check whatsapp in between. I used to listen to the music as it was my stress buster.

Careers360: Who is your ideal or biggest inspiration in life and why?

Shubham Gupta: My father is my biggest inspiration in life as he is focussed on studies till today. Seniors from my coaching who secured good ranks inspired me to work hard for my dream.

Careers360: You know you are an inspiration to thousands of students across the country. Do you have any message for future aspirants on tackling the JEE Advanced exam?

Shubham Gupta: I want to convey that have trust and faith on your teachers. Practice as much as possible specially in Maths. Studying NCERT is must specially in Chemistry. I wish good luck to all the future aspirants.
