The GATE 2025 cutoff scores for various participating institutes online after the GATE results are declared. The cutoff scores will depend on various factors such as the number of candidates appearing for the exam, the difficulty level of the paper, the number of seats available in the institute, and the previous year's cutoff trends. Moreover, the GATE cutoff scores also vary for different categories such as General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD. Candidates who meet the cutoff scores and other eligibility criteria will be eligible for admission to the M.Tech./Ph.D. programmes in various institutes.
The GATE 2025 qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff are two different cutoffs.
The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score that a candidate needs to obtain in order to be eligible for admission to the various M.Tech./Ph.D. programmes offered by the participating institutes. The qualifying cutoff is usually lower than the admission cutoff, as it is the minimum score required for a candidate to be considered for admission.
The admission cutoff, on the other hand, is the score above which a candidate is likely to be offered admission to a particular institute. The admission cutoff depends on various factors such as the number of seats available in the institute, the number of candidates who have applied, the difficulty level of the paper, and the previous year cutoff trends. The admission cutoff may vary for different categories such as General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD.

The GATE exam score will be used by various institutes to shortlist candidates for their postgraduate programs. After the announcement of the GATE 2025 result, each participating institute will release its admission notification specifying the details of the admission process, including counselling, if any. Candidates who qualify GATE 2025 and meet the eligibility criteria of the participating institutes will be considered for admission to their preferred institute by following the admission process specified by the institute.
The admission process may involve various stages such as the application process, shortlisting of candidates, written test/interview, and document verification. Candidates who are shortlisted by the institute will be called for the next stage of the admission process. The final merit list of the selected candidates will be prepared based on the candidate's GATE score, academic record, and performance in the written test/interview, if any.
GATE COAP is a common admission platform introduced by the IITs in 2017 to make admission offers to GATE-qualified candidates seeking admission to M.Tech./Ph.D. programmes. While candidates must apply individually to IITs, they can view offers and accept or reject them through the COAP portal. COAP provides a centralised counselling process that ensures transparency and efficiency in the admission process. Admission offers are based on GATE scores and seat availability, making the admission process more streamlined and straightforward for candidates.
Admission to IITs is a two-step process:
Step 1: Qualifying in GATE Exam
The first step is to qualify for the GATE exam, which is mandatory for admission to postgraduate engineering programs offered by the IITs. The GATE score is used by the IITs to shortlist candidates for their postgraduate programs. The candidates must have a valid GATE score in the respective discipline to apply for the postgraduate programs offered by the IITs.
Step 2: Applying through IITs' Admission Portal
The second step involves applying for the postgraduate programs offered by the IITs through their admission portal. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria of the IITs and have a valid GATE score can apply for their preferred postgraduate programs through the IITs' admission portal.
The admission process may vary slightly for different IITs, but it generally involves shortlisting candidates based on their GATE score, academic record, and performance in the written test/interview, if any. The final merit list of the selected candidates will be prepared based on their GATE score and other criteria as specified by the IITs.
It is important for the candidates to keep a close watch on the official websites of the IITs to stay updated with their admission process and important dates.
The documents that need to be self-attested and submitted along with the original documents may vary depending on the counselling or admission process. Here is a list of the documents that are commonly required to be self-attested and submitted along with the original documents:
GATE scorecard: A self-attested copy of the GATE scorecard is required for admission or counselling.
Photo ID proof: A self-attested copy of a valid government-issued photo ID proof such as Aadhaar card, passport, driving licence, voter ID, etc. is required.
Birth certificate: A self-attested copy of the original birth certificate issued by a competent authority or the Class X board certificate as date of birth proof is required.
Class XII mark sheet: A self-attested copy of the original Class XII mark sheet is required.
Qualifying examination mark sheets: A self-attested copy of the original mark sheets of the qualifying examination for all semesters is required.
Degree or provisional certificate: A self-attested copy of the original degree or provisional certificate is required if the degree is completed.
Category certificate: A self-attested copy of the original category certificate for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC categories, if applicable.
Undertaking for OBC status: A self-attested copy of the candidate's undertaking regarding OBC status in the required format is required.
PwD certificate: A self-attested copy of the original certificate for PwD candidates, if applicable.
Migration and transfer certificates: A self-attested copy of the original migration certificate of the last institute/university attended and the original transfer certificate from the head of the institute last attended is required.
Conduct and course completion certificates: A self-attested copy of the original conduct certificate from the head of the institute last attended and the original course completion certificate from the head of the university or institute, in case the result is awaited, is required.
Photographs: Three self-attested copies of recent passport size photographs are required.
COAP conducts centralized counselling for admissions to various institutes offering postgraduation on the basis of GATE scores. All the participating institutes will release separate notifications consisting of the selection procedure. Candidates will be required to fulfil the eligibility criteria mentioned by the institutes to participate in the selection process. According to the MHRD guidelines, a minimum of 70% weightage will be given to the candidate's GATE score and 30% will be given to the candidate’s performance in test/interview and/or academic record.
Admissions will be made in order of the merit and preferences made by the candidates in their application form. The basis of selection by the IITs is given below:
Category | Selection Basis |
GATE Qualified candidates | Valid normalized GATE marks |
IIT Graduates | CGPA≥8 |
Any candidate who wishes to appear for the GATE exam should at first check the books required for the preparation. Just having a thought of appearing for the exam will not get you anywhere and therefore start your preparation by reading good and informative books. Having a large number of books will distract you and will block the path of your success, hence pick up the best books for GATE preparation.
