Engineer’s Day 2025 - Every year, India proudly celebrates National Engineer’s Day on September 15. The occasion is celebrated in honour of the legendary engineer, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The main focus of the event is to recognise the role of engineers in nation-building and promote their progress. This year’s theme is ‘Engineering Excellence Driving India Forward’. Engineers are to be the forerunners of Vikasit Bharat 2047. In PM Narendra Modi’s own words, “Our nation is blessed to have a skilled and talented pool of engineers who are contributing to nation building.”

Why We Celebrate Engineers’ Day 2025?

Why we celebrate Engineer Day? Well, September 15 is the birth date of Sir M. Visveswarayya. He is known as one of the leading engineers and a nation builder whose contributions put India on the global stage. Some of his major contributions are as follows

  • Sir M. Visvesvaraya had worked as the Chief Engineer of Mysore during the 1930’s. He constructed of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in 1932, which was Asia’s largest at the time. He introduced innovations like automatic sluice gates to regulate water flow more efficiently. Moreover, the dam is known to have transformed agriculture in the Mandya region.

  • He solved the problem of Musi River floods with the ingenious design of reservoirs like Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar to better manage floods. His ideas are still relevant in today’s disaster management efforts.

  • Being a prolific writer was also one of his attributes. He authored a famous book, Planned Economy for India and Reconstructing India. In that, he called for industrial growth, strong infrastructure, and better education and governance. Even today, his ideas continue to influence India’s development path.
