Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is one of the engineering branches that focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining circuits, electronic devices, and communication systems. As the branch requires four years to complete, the ECE placements become important. Through RTI responses, we have analysed here 14 institutes (3 IITs, 10 NITs, and 1 IIIT) to provide detailed placement trends, salaries and student participation.

What the Data Says:
VNIT Nagpur recorded the highest CTC of Rs 64.00 LPA among the 10 NITs, followed by MNIT Jaipur (Rs 56.00 LPA) and NIT Hamirpur (Rs 53.00 LPA).
NIT Surathkal recorded the highest average CTC of Rs 21.57 LPA. However, the placement rate stood at 76.72% (registered), behind VNIT Nagpur (88.89%), NIT Calicut (85.53%), MNIT Jaipur (84.47%), NIT Hamirpur (80.65%), and NIT Rourkela (79.75%).
While only one IIIT responded through RTI, the data tells the smaller picture for ECE placements.
| Institute Name | Intake (2021-22) | Students Registered for Placements (2024-25) | Offers Accepted (2024-25) | Placement % (Registered) | Placement % (Intake) | Max CTC | Average CTC |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
IIIT Pune | 50 | 31 | 17 | 54.84% | 34.00% | Rs 28.99 LPA | Rs 13.66 LPA |
The data shows the placement rate for ECE at IIIT Pune recorded is 54.84%, where 31 students registered for placements and 17 accepted offers. The highest CTC stood at Rs 28.99 LPA, with an average CTC of Rs 13.66 LPA.
We often see a discrepancy between students registered for placements and accepted offers. For example, at IIT Bhubaneswar, 47 students registered, but only 37 accepted offers. This means 10 students (around 21.28%) who likely participated but did not secure or accept an offer.
In case of NIT Delhi, 51 students registered for placements but only 35 accepted offers (68.63%). This leaves 16 students (around 31.37%) who did not get placements. At IIIT Pune, the placement rate is 54.84% (31 registered, 17 accepted), indicating nearly half the batch did not get offers.
One of the primary reasons for this discrepancy is that students register for placements but fail to clear the selection process of any employer. Another reason is some students may opt out due to higher education or lower job prospects or the job role that did not meet their expectations.
Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is frequently compared with other engineering branches like Computer Science Engineering (CSE). This generally helps students with market demand and ROI assessment.
The following table highlights the key comparison between ECE and CSE.
Particulars | CSE | ECE |
|---|---|---|
No. of Institutes Considered | 23 | 14 |
Intake (2021-22) | 2,332 | 1,288 |
Students Registered for Placements (2024-25) | 2,188 | 1,161 |
Placement Offers Accepted (2024-25) | 1,892 | 946 |
Placement % (Registered) | 86.47% | 81.48% |
Average CTC | Rs 20.35 LPA | Rs 15.37 LPA |
The comparison shows 86.47% CSE students secured placements while 81.48% ECE students received placements. The difference is roughly 5%. This can also be attributed to the less number of institutes responded (14) for ECE placement analysis in comparison to 23 institutes for CSE.
However, this presents an overall scenario where CSE students have a slightly higher probability of getting placed, while ECE graduates also enjoy a high success rate.
With an overall placement rate of 81.48% across 14 institutes (3 IITs, 10 NITs, and 1 IIITs), IITs remain a premium demand among students, demonstrating an overall placement rate of 95.11%. NITs also show a decent placement rate of 79.93%, with an overall average CTC of Rs 14.64 LPA.
ECE makes students eligible for core hardware roles and prepares them for the IT job market. It has become the most popular choice in today’s engineering landscape.
