Tech programme after polytechnic can do so by either of the two options i.e students can get into a B. Tech programme through lateral entrance examination or through engineering entrance examination.
If the student takes admission through lateral entry, then he or she will directly gain entry in the second year of the B. Tech programme. One needs to remember that the lateral entry examination is a state-level examination. At the time of counselling, the student can choose the college from the state according to the rank in the examination. A majority of the engineering colleges have seats reserved for students who want to gain admission through lateral entry. However, in the IITs there is no lateral entry.
Students who are interested in pursuing B. Tech after polytechnic can also gain admission into B. Tech programmes through national or state level engineering entrance examinations. Students will have to appear for JEE examination or the various state level entrance examinations. However, one needs to remember that, if an individual gains entry through this method, then he or she will be able to take the admission in the first year of the programme. If an individual opts for this method, then their student can gain entry in the IITs or the NITs.
Both the options are valid, but it depends on the student what he or she wants. If the individual wants to save on 1 year, then he or she can go for lateral entry, but if the person wants to complete the B. Tech course from a prestigious institution, then one can give the national level entrance examination, get selected and pursue the B. Tech programme through the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) or the National Institutes of Technology (NITs). It entirely depends on the students how they want to go about making their careers in the engineering field.

A plethora of subjects are taught in the first year, and some of them are quite irrelevant to the eventual specialisation, hence students who have gained lateral entry can bypass these subjects. Some of these subjects might bring the over CGPA down for a student if he or she does not have the aptitude for it.
