Careers360: Is this your first attempt or did you attempt GATE earlier?
Abhash: No! This is my first attempt in GATE.

Careers360: What was the reason you appeared for GATE 2020? Pls elaborate.
Abhash: Primary reason behind me appearing in GATE is to join PSU and get a decent job as I have to support my family financially. Since PSU recruitment through GATE has become highly competitive, I also have to score good marks to get selected.

Careers360: Have you applied to any PSUs recruiting through GATE? Which ones?
Abhash: I have applied in POSCO and ONGC and will apply inothers as soon as the openings are announced related to my specialisation.

Careers360: When did you start your preparation? How did you prepare for the GATE exam ? How many hours did you put in per day as per the stage of preparation?
Abhash: I started my preparation when I was in my fourth semester. I joined the weekend batch for Saturday and Sunday and continued preparing till I gave the exam.

Careers360: Have you taken any coaching? If yes- From where? How did it help?
Abhash: I took coaching from an institute in Patna. It really helped me a lot in making my concepts clear, solving my doubts and preparing in an effective manner. The study material and notes from coaching institutes provided a concrete and concise understanding of every topic which are asked in GATE exam.

Careers360: Can you share any preparation strategies with our readers? When should one start their preparation for GATE? How to schedule study time and make timetables?
Abhash: As per my advice, every student should follow their own preparation strategy which suits them best. One thing which is important to have a clear understanding of the syllabus and pattern of the exam.

One should start preparing for the exam early, say in their graduation so as to complete the whole syllabus and not to get over-hooked before the exam. Make a preparation time-table as per the availability of time out of college. Study regularly and revise what you study to keep everything in mind.

Careers360: How important do you feel mock tests are and why? Is it true that if one solves the previous year question papers, there is a good chance of cracking the exam successfully?
Abhash: Mock test and sample papers are very important in any exam including GATE. I gave mock tests and sample papers before the exam and also throughout the preparation. It helps in evaluating the preparation level, mistakes we are making and time we take for solving the questions.

Careers360: Which books did you follow for GATE preparation? Pls name some very important must read books for GATE
Abhash: I studied only from the study materials and notes provided by my coaching institutes. I did not study any additional book apart from the coaching study material.

Careers360: Which are the topics one should focus more on? Kindly give us some details
Abhash: I would advise that students should cover all the topics included in the syllabus as questions in the exam can be asked from any topic. Students should start preparing early to cover the syllabus. As far as important topics are covered, I gave special emphasis to Strength EMT and Power Plants.

Careers360: What was the toughest aspect in your GATE preparation?
Abhash: The tough aspect I would say was to manage time for GATE preparation. I also have to make sure that I get placed in any company because of my poor financial conditions. Managing college studies, GATE preparation and placements all together was the tough part.

Careers360: What did you do for leisure? Any specific activities that helped you unwind?
Abhash: I love playing sports, all kinds of games.

Careers360: How should you schedule answering the GATE exam – which section to attempt first and which next? Did you have any strategy? Kindly share your exam experience with us.
Abhash: My strategy for attempting questions in the exam was that to first attempt all questions for which I know the answers and do not waste much time on questions for which I am not sure.

Careers360: What did you feel was a tough thing for you in the GATE exam?
Abhash: The questions in the exam were conceptual and from basic understanding of the topics. Only thing which I focussed on is to attempt as many correct answers as I can and secure a decent score.

Careers360: Any advice for the future aspirants?
Abhash: My advice to students who are preparing for the exam is that they must not pressurize themselves to study. Study in a planned manner, stay focussed and take mock tests to analyze the preparation level.

gate score cut off of BITS hydrabad last year ? and tell me more about BITs hydrabad MTech cs placement and which college is better than bits Hyderabad

Shivang Dubey 26th May, 2020

Hey Anant

BITS gives admission to it's M.E. program through 2 process:

  • BITS HD online test
  • GATE/GPAT score

50% seats for BITS HD test students and 50% seats for students through GATE/GPAT.

According to past year records, one needs to score at least ~650 marks in GATE CS for admission.

Note: Application for BITS HD 2020 is still open, follow to know more; BITS HD 2020

BITS Hyderbad has a good placement record, where in previous years the highest package was 14 lakhs per annum and average salary 6 lakhs per annum. Microsoft, Infosys, Wipro, Samsung were also part of the recruitment drive.

If you get BITS Pilani campus, then it would be better and obviously Indian Institute of Technology and IISc are much preferred for M.Techs.

All the best
