Reaction of NaCl with conc. $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$ liberates a gas, X that turns moist blue litmus paper red. When gas X is passed into a test tube containing egg shell powder suspended in water another gas, Y is generated which when passed through lime water makes it milky. The gases X and Y, respectively, are

Smart Tips: Some Basic Concept in Chemistry

Heating of Carbonates

  • Group II metal carbonates like MgCO3, CaCO3  and other bivalent metal carbonates (PbCO3, ZnCO3) liberate CO2 on heating and leave their oxide as residue

    \mathrm{MCO_3 \overset{\Delta}{\longrightarrow}MO + CO_2}

  • Group 1 metal carbonates  like Na2CO3, K2CO3 are resistant to decomposition upon heating (except Li)

Heating of Bicarbonates

  • Group II metal bicarbonates like Ca(HCO3)2 liberate CO2 and H2O on heating and leave their oxide as residue

\mathrm{M(HCO_3)_2 \overset{\Delta}{\longrightarrow}MO + 2 \:CO_2+H_2O}

  • Group I metal bicarbonates like NaHCO3 liberate CO2 and H2O on heating and leave their carbonate as residue

\mathrm{2\:Na(HCO_3) \overset{\Delta}{\longrightarrow}Na_2CO_3 +CO_2+H_2O}

Acid-Base Titrations involving Multiple acids or bases

Sometimes, the problems involving neutralisation reactions involve more than one acids or bases. In such cases too, the underlying principle is the law of equivalence. i.e.

meq. of acid 1 + meq. of acid 2 + ....... = meq of base 1 + meq. of base 2 + .......
