    Bleaching Powder

    Preparation

    • It is a mixture of CaCl2 and Ca(OCl)2.
    • It is manufactured in Bachmann's plant.
    • The chemical reaction for the preparation of bleaching powder is as follows:
      \mathrm{Ca(OH)_{2}\: +\: Cl_{2}\: \rightarrow CaOCl_{2}\: +\: H_{2}O}

    Physical properties

    • It is yellowish-white powder with smell of chlorine.
    • Most of it is soluble in water but small amount is insoluble in lime.

    Chemical properties

    • Reaction with insufficient and excess dilute acid:
      \mathrm{CaOCl_{2}\: +\: H_{2}SO_{4}\: \rightarrow CaSO_{4}\: +\: CaCl_{2}\: +\: 2HCl\: +\: O_{2}}
    • Autoxidation: When it undergoes autoxidation, it loses its available chlorine due to which it affects its bleaching process.
      \mathrm{6CaOCl_{2}\: \rightarrow 5CaCl_{2}\:+\: Ca(ClO_{3})_{2}}
    • Catalytic decomposition: The catalytic decomposition of bleaching powder occurs as follows:
      \mathrm{2CaOCl_{2}\: \overset{CoCl_{2}}{\longrightarrow}2CaCl_{2}\:+\: O_{2}}

    Uses

    • It is an oxidising agent.
    • It is a chlorinating agent.
    • It is used as a disinfectant.
    • It sterilizes water.
