CAT 2025 MBA Entrance for Engineers

The majority of applicants for the CAT exam 2025 come from engineering backgrounds, continuing a long-standing trend. Engineers have traditionally dominated the list of top scorers and the applicant pool, and CAT 2025 is no different. More than 65–70% of CAT applicants are in the engineering stream, with many coming from IITs, NITs, and prestigious state engineering colleges, according to media reports and data from prior years. In 2024, out of 3.29 lakh applicants, 14 candidates were 100 percentilers and were from the engineering background.

Ever since this trend has started, there is a notion that engineers naturally excel in CAT, particularly in sections like Quantitative Aptitude (QA) and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) sections.

The CAT exam's format takes advantage of engineering students' strong points. They have a big advantage in QA and DILR because of their academic background in mathematics and logical reasoning. Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), on the other hand, is frequently difficult, so many engineers prepare for CAT 2025 by concentrating on this area.

CAT Exam 2025: Why Engineers Prefer MBA After BTech?

Over the past few years, a noticeable trend has emerged — the majority of CAT aspirants and MBA students now come from engineering backgrounds. But why do so many engineers pursue an MBA after BTech? The answer lies in career growth, role diversity, and long-term aspirations.

Technical jobs have often become repetitive or limiting in terms of career progression. In contrast, an MBA opens doors to high-paying and dynamic roles in consulting, product management, finance, and marketing. Moreover, engineers are believed to have a natural advantage in the CAT exam 2025 due to their strong quantitative and logical reasoning skills.

After earning their engineering degree, many students choose an MBA for the following reasons:

  • Higher compensation packages, especially from top B-schools

  • Access to entrepreneurship support via MBA incubators

  • A balanced skill set that merges business acumen with technical expertise

  • Faster promotions and leadership opportunities

  • Broader career options beyond core technical roles

CAT 2025 Preparation Strategy for Engineers

Many engineers choose to appear for CAT exam due to their strong aptitude in problem-solving and numbers. With a structured approach, engineers can turn their technical edge into a CAT advantage. Here are some of the tips which can help you prepare a strategy as an engineer for the upcoming CAT 2025 exam.

  • Engineers naturally perform better in Quantitative Aptitude (QA) and Logical Reasoning (DILR). Make sure you focus on accuracy and speed in these sections to maximise your score.

  • Make sure you practice all three sections daily.

QA: Start with Arithmetic, then Algebra, Geometry, and Modern Math.

DILR: Begin with simple sets, then move to medium and high-difficulty puzzles.

VARC: Read editorials daily (The Hindu, Aeon, NYT) and solve 2 RCs + 5 VA questions.

  • Read daily for 30-45 minutes to improve vocabulary and comprehension.

  • Start with 1 mock test/week to increase to 2-3 per week closer to the exam.

  • Use the 60-second rule: if you can’t solve a question in 60 seconds, skip.

  • Apply logical reasoning, approximation techniques, and elimination methods. Avoid over-engineering — CAT is about smart attempts, not solving everything.

  • In the end, make sure you have a weekly plan prepared.

Bonus: CAT 2025 Prep Hacks & Resources That Every Engineer Must Know!

Engineers can crack CAT 2025 with the right mix of strategy and resources. Focus on daily RC practice for VARC, solve 2–3 DILR sets regularly, and build speed in QA using shortcuts.

Students can refer to Arun Sharma books, 2IIM, CATKing mocks, IMS Learning, Career Launcher, and various YouTube explainer videos for CAT 2025 preparation. Smart revision and mock test analysis are key to maximising your percentile.

Questions related to CAT

Have a question related to CAT ?

Hello Aspirant,

Yes, if your caste is listed under Central OBC and you come under the category of Non-Creamy Layer, then you shall be eligible for the OBC-NCL reservation in the CAT exam and IIM admissions, irrespective of its being categorized as OEC in Kerala. Remember to get a valid OBC-NCL certificate obtained as per the format prescribed by the Government of India.

Hey Vijay:)

Thanks for reaching out!

OEC,(Other Eligible Communities) is a state-specific reservation category used in Kerala, and it is not recognised as a separate category in central-level exams like the CAT.

For Central govt exams candidates must choose from the recognised categories: General,SC,ST,OBC-NCL,EWS or PwD.If your community is listed under OEC-SC or OEC-ST in Kerala, you should check whether it falls under SC or ST in the central list and apply accordingly.

Similarly,If your OEC community is in the central OBC list and you meet the non-creamy layer(NCL)rules, you can apply as OBC-NCL, otherwise you need to apply under the general category.

You can verify caste's status in the central list on the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) website.

Hope this clears your doubt!

Hi dear candidate,

The score of your CAT exam is valid for one year from the date of exam.

For example: If your CAT exam was held on 24th November 2024 then your score is valid till 31st December 2025 meaning that you can take admission in the academic year 2025 - 27.

BEST REGARDS

With a Telangana EWS state rank of 2000 in NEET 2025, you have a decent chance of getting an MBBS seat under Category A (Convener quota) in government or semi-government medical colleges, especially during the later rounds of counselling. Your chances are higher in newer or peripheral colleges.

CAT ( Common Addmission Test ) is for those students who want to study MBA or other post-graduation program in mangement field. Who have Bachelor's degree with minimum 50% recognised university can apply for CAT .final year graduation students are also eligible to apply for CAT exam .

M/s Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, one of the top four audit and accounting firms in the world with headquarters at London, UK, and with an operational presence in 153 countries, hires Management Trainees (MT) from all the premier management institutes of India thrice every year, in the months of January, May and September.

Each new group of Management Trainees (MT) have to go through a four month rigorous training schedule, after which they have to pass through a test consisting of a written assessment and a case-analysis. The top hundred ranked Management Trainees (MT) based on the performance in the test are confirmed as Management Executives (ME). The rest are given the opportunity of undergoing the training for four months one more time along with the next batch of Management Trainees (MT) and then passing through the subsequent test consisting of the written assessment and case-analysis. The Management Trainee (MT) who fails to get confirmed as a Management Executive (ME) the second time is fired.

The scatter-graph below depicts the number of Management Trainees (MT) at Deloitte taking the tests from January 2020 till May 2022, and the vis-à-vis hired Management Trainees (MT) at Deloitte who were fired :

Two friends Moloy and Niloy passed out from the Purulia Institute of Science and Technology with B.Tech degrees in Mechanical Engineering, but even after a year placement was hard to find. So they decided to take the challenge head-on, came down to Kolkata, rented a garage space on Park Street, and having an affinity towards making people enjoy good food, started their firm named 'B.Tech Bread-Omlette Wala'.

They started with three items on the menu. One was the French Toast which could be prepared in 3 minutes. The second was the Egg Tortillas which took 15 minutes to prepare. Any one of Moloy and Niloy could prepare any one of them at a time. The third was the Egg Bhurji with French Fries. This however was prepared on an automated fryer which could prepare 3 servings at a time and took 5 minutes irrespective of the number of servings equal to or below 3. The fryer did not need anyone to attend to it, and the time to put in the raw ingredients could be neglected. So one could tend to the preparation of other items while the Egg Bhurji with French Fries were being prepared.

They wanted to serve the orders as early as possible after the order was given. The individual items in any order were served as and when all the items were ready, and the order was then considered closed. None of the items on the menu were prepared in advance in anticipation of future orders.

On the first day, 3 groups of customers came in and ordered at 6.00 pm, 6.10 pm, and 6.13 pm. The first order was for a plate of Egg Tortillas, two plates of French Toast, and three plates of Egg Bhurji with French Fries. The second order was for a plate of French Toast and two plates of Egg Bhurji with French Fries. The third order was for a plate of Egg Tortilla and a plate of Egg Bhurji with French Fries.
