NIRF Placement Analysis: Top Colleges Offering Dual Degree Programmes In Engineering

Updated on 26 Sep 2023, 08:59 AM IST

The dual-degree engineering programme is a five-year engineering degree that provides two degrees under a single programme. The students can earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree in engineering through this programme.

Students often get confused between the dual degree programme and the postgraduate (PG) integrated programme. The duration of completion of both exams is the same i.e. 5 years but both programmes are actually different. After completing a dual degree programme, you will get two degrees whereas, after an postgraduate integrated programme, you will receive one degree, i.e. the master's degree.

Careers360 has analysed the placement status of dual degree engineering courses provided at some of the top engineering colleges in India based on the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking. Along with this, we present the analysis of graduated students, the median salary, and information on the percentage of students opting for higher education. An interesting point to note is, only nine of the top 50 engineering colleges (ranked by NIRF) provide dual degrees in engineering programmes.

While analysing this report we found that despite having introduced the dual degree programmes, as many as nine colleges featured in the NIRF list. The colleges have tried their best to secure good placements as well as salaries. Engineering classrooms still are male-dominated, but colleges who just started the programme are encouraging female participation.

IIT Mandi started the dual-degree engineering programme in 2019-20. So there were no students enrolled in the course prior to this year. Similarly, the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar started accepting admissions for dual degree programmes in 2016-17. The first batch through this programme graduated in 2020-21.

NIT Durgapur also had its first batch of graduates in 2021-22.

The percentage of graduate students is calculated on the basis of students who graduated in the minimum stipulated time of five years in respect of the total intake. The total intake here is the sum of students admitted in a particular year plus the lateral entry in the academic year. None of the colleges included in the analysis have admitted students via lateral entry except IIT Bombay.

When it comes to the percentage of graduate students, IIT Delhi has witnessed a fall of 6.24 percentage points in the students graduating in 2021-22 in comparison to the graduation year of 2020-21. The term percentage point is used to show the difference between two percentage values. IIT BHU has shown fantastic results with 99.62 per cent of students graduating in 2021-22.

The table below has mentioned all the top nine colleges providing dual degrees in engineering with the percentage of students graduating over a period of three years.

Placements For Graduating Students

In the academic year 2021-22, IIT Delhi had a lower percentage of students graduating after five years compared to other colleges that enrolled students for the programme. However, it stood out as the only college that successfully placed its entire batch of students.

On the brighter side, colleges like IIT Bombay and ISM Dhanbad have put in significant efforts to improve their placement numbers in 2021-22. IIT Bombay witnessed a remarkable increase of 28.25 percentage points compared to 2019-20. The efforts of ISM Dhanbad cannot be ignored when it witnessed a rise in placement by 11.37 percentage points in 2021-22 when compared to 2019-20.

However, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology experienced a decline in placement percentage in the recent two years when compared to the year 2019-20.

The table below lists the placement percentages of the dual-degree engineering programmes of the top nine colleges as per NIRF 2023. The placement percentage here calculated the basis of students placed with respect to graduated students

Above Average Median Salary

ISM Dhanbad with good placement numbers also stands out with a remarkable increase in its median salary. Graduates here secured the highest median salary among all the engineering colleges in India in the year 2021-22. Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar also saw a significant jump in median salary, increasing by four lakhs in 2021-22 when compared to the previous year, 2020-21.

In the year where no admissions were taken, there were no placements and so, no salary was offered as mentioned in the table below.

The effort made by colleges to ensure good placements for their students in 2021-22 is evident. There is an overall increase in median salaries compared to previous years.

However, IIT Delhi stands as an exception to this trend. It has shown a decline in the median salary offered to students in 2021-22 compared to 2020-21. However, it's this median salary (2021-22) is still higher than what was reported in the year 2019-20.

The table below mentions the median salary offered by the colleges in a period of three years.

Students Opting For Higher Education

Seventy five per cent of graduates of dual engineering of National Institute of Technology Durgapur opted for higher studies in 2021-22. To put this into absolute numbers six out of a total of eight students opted to further their education. The college found it challenging to place eight students with a decent salary, so most of them had to move for higher education.

Among the nine colleges taken into analysis, only four had absolutely no students opting for higher education in 2021-22. There is a probability that students from these colleges are satisfied with the placement opportunities and salary packages provided by their institutions.

IIT Bombay, which recorded, more than 30 per cent of its students going for higher education in 2019-20 had not even two per cent of students opting for higher education in 2021-22.

The table below shows the percentage of students opting for higher studies in a period of three years.

Male-Dominated Student Participation

Even after so many years, engineering remains a male-dominated industry with more than 70 per cent enrollment of male students. However, institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi and the National Institute of Technology Durgapur are actively promoting greater participation of women in their dual degree programs. The percentage mentioned reflects the percentage on the data of students currently enrolled in the college across all years of study.

At present, over half of NIT Durgapur's undergraduate students are from West Bengal, while IIT Mandi doesn't have any students from Himachal Pradesh. There is still some percentage of students enrolled in colleges outside their state. There is hardly any participation seen from outside the country.

The government has set aside 10 per cent of seats for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. IIT Mandi has the highest percentage of students from this category(EWS) surpassing the minimum reservation requirement. All colleges have actively promoted the participation of students from socially disadvantaged categories such as Scheduled Caste(SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Caste (OBC). They have encouraged social inclusivity in the programme with at least 40 per cent of seats filled by students from these backgrounds.

Look at the table below on the percentage of student diversity among the total students currently enrolled on the programme.
