Top Indian Recruiters: ‘What IT firms look for in freshers,’ answers IIIT Bangalore Director
Information Technology (IT) industry in general - and large IT firms in particular - has been the major recruiter across college campuses, in the past decade in India. While the requirements of individual firms might vary, the major trend remains invariant across the corporations, both Indian and MNC’s. Here are my three cents of wisdom!
Know the ‘fundas’ well
Large IT firms have presence across the globe and projects across industry segments. When they recruit young graduates, they look for an ability to adapt, adjust and accommodate and perform at their best. ‘What they know’ is less important, than ‘how well they know’; one is expected to know well whatever they claim to know. Understanding things well, gives the confidence to the recruiters that the chosen candidate will use her/ his innate knowledge and understanding to learn new things on the field, and give their clients a ‘best in class’ experience.
In today’s globalized world, communication skills play a major role, more so in Information Technology services. Chances are, the candidate chosen from a campus, might work on the development of a new microprocessor chip with design teams across the globe, implement a ‘smart city’ project in a country across the continent or write an App that will be used by users in more than a dozen countries. All such projects demand an ability not only to ‘do’, but also to ‘talk’, that too really well, to other developers across locations (may be in different countries) on a wide ranging areas, as IT impacts every major industry (transportation, hospitality, financial services, manufacturing, core sector and government).
Team working skills
While communication skills are important, an ability to play a constructive role as a team member is even more important to today’s large IT services firms. Individual contributions count; but your ability to be part of a team that contributes substantially to the success of large-scale impactful projects counts much more. Your ability to get along with others, being flexible, being sensitive to recognize different individuals – their tastes, likes and dislikes, styles, work habits – and appreciate the differences and diversity rather than complain about the contrasts matter a lot to today’s large IT services firms. Best wishes; happy job hunting!

LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network, uncovered top 25 skills that are going to be in demand this year by analyzing the hiring and recruiting activities that occurred on LinkedIn in 2015. A majority, 18 to be precise, belong to the IT sector. Here’s a look at Cloud and Distributed Computing; and Algorithm Design that are part of this listing.
Hot skills in IT
Cloud & Distributed Computing
Computing is all about how computer system works, and how they are programmed. Now it has taken on a much advanced form called cloud computing. Distributed Computing is all about working with a group of systems located at different places and connected over a network to work on a common problem. Interestingly, each one of these systems does not share their memory or processors. Cloud computing is, in fact, an extension of distributed computing.
Why is this skill trending?
Most of the companies specially IT companies have to deal with huge amount of data and information. That’s where cloud computing helps.
Courses in Cloud Computing
Hindustan University (B.Tech in IT with specialization in Cloud Computing)
Jain University (MCA in Storage and Cloud Technology)
University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) Dehradun offers B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering with specialization in Cloud Computing and Virtualization Technology in academic collaboration with IBM
Dr. Balwinder Sodhi,
Cloud computing technologies allow for consolidation and better utilization of computing resources. Provisioning of computing resources is easier and much faster. As such most organizations are adopting cloud computing technologies to be more effective and agile.
Amazon, IBM, Accenture, Microsoft, Google, CISCO, Oracle, Citrix and AT&T
It is a specific method which involves mathematical processes to solve specific problems. Neeldhara Misra, Associate Professor at Computer Science & Engineering Department of IIT Gandhinagar explains clearly what Algorithm Design is: “Algorithms are procedures for solving well-defined problems (such as sorting a list of phone numbers, or quickly finding a piece of text in a large document). As far as possible, we would like to come up with solutions that are both accurate and efficient. It is often challenging to achieve both these goals, especially given the growing amounts of data that we often have to deal with. The field of algorithm design involves techniques for coming up with such procedures, and the closely related notion of algorithm analysis (often clubbed with design) studies trade-offs between accuracy and efficiency,” she said.
Courses in Algorithm Design
It is taught as an elective at IITs and other institutes. Good online courses in Design and Analysis of Algorithm Design offered by NPTEL, Coursera.
Why is this skill trending?
Top IT firms like Infosys and TCS are now turning to algorithm tools and programme to check attrition rate by gathering socio-economic data of incoming engineers like educational qualifications of parents and household incomes and applying algorithm tools and programmes to check whether a candidate being interviewed for a position in a company will be a good hire or not.
TCS, Wipro, Infosys, R&D departments of IT firms.

Which will be a better option IIIT Vadodara CSE or BITS Hyderabad Electrical and Electronics Engineering...
You have quite decent college choices. Getting any of the two wont be a bad option. IIIT Vadodara has a very good placement in cse. But iiit vadodara doesnt have its own campus. Means the hostels are far from where the classes are conducted. So being a engineer you wont have a campus life but if have want to study cse only then you can go for iiitv but otherwise bits would be a great choice.
All the best!
which i choose iiit surat ece or iiit vadodara diu cse
If we compare branches wise CSE at IIIT Vadodara is better than ECE at IIIT Surat. Also, if we look from a placement perspective IIIT Vadodara offers better placements. They have the highest CTC package of 36LPA and an average CTC package of 11LPA whereas IIIT Surat offers the highest CTC package of 40LPA and an average CTC Package of 6 to 8 LPA.
