can i get top 10 iit through GATE 2025 with 55 marks with sc category in mechanical design

Kenma Kozume 11th Feb, 2025

hi ,

Securing admission to a top IIT for a Master's program in Mechanical Engineering through GATE depends on several factors, including your GATE score, category, and the specific cutoffs of each institution.

GATE Qualifying Marks for Mechanical Engineering (2024):

  • General: 28.6
  • OBC-NCL/EWS: 25.7
  • SC/ST/PwD: 19.0

Admission Cutoffs for Top IITs:

Admission cutoffs vary annually and are influenced by factors such as the number of applicants, seat availability, and overall performance. For instance, in previous years, the GATE cutoff for Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras was around 778 for the General category and 522 for SC candidates.

Estimating Your Admission Prospects:

With a raw score of 55 marks in GATE 2025, your GATE score (out of 1000) will be determined after normalization. Given that the SC category qualifying mark is 19.0, a score of 55 is significantly higher, which strengthens your eligibility.

Next Steps:

  1. Await Official Results: Once the GATE 2025 results are announced, check your official GATE score out of 1000.

  2. Review IIT Cutoffs: Examine the specific cutoffs for the IITs you're interested in, focusing on the SC category for Mechanical Engineering.

  3. Apply Through COAP: Participate in the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) for IIT admissions, where you can view and accept offers from various institutes.

hope this helps

How to start my preparation for gate as a mechanical engineer of 2nd year b.tech having a backlog

kumardurgesh1802 8th Feb, 2025

Hello there,

Starting GATE preparation in the 2nd year is a great decision, even with a backlog. Here’s a structured plan to help you:

1. Clear Your Basics First

  • Start with Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude as they contribute 30% of the marks.

  • Focus on core subjects like Thermodynamics, Strength of Materials, and Fluid Mechanics.

  • Use standard textbooks (e.g., RK Bansal for Fluid Mechanics, PK Nag for Thermodynamics).

    2. Manage Your Backlog

  • Prioritize clearing your backlog, as a strong foundation is essential for GATE.
  • Devote 1-2 hours daily to backlog subjects while studying for GATE.

    3. Create a Study Plan

  • Set daily and weekly targets with subject-wise completion goals.

  • Allocate 3-4 hours daily for GATE preparation along with your semester studies.

  • Keep weekends for revision and problem-solving .

    4. Use the Right Study Materials

  • Refer to standard books and NPTEL lectures .
  • Solve previous 10–15 years’ GATE question papers .
  • Enroll in a good online course or coaching (optional) .

    5. Focus on Problem-Solving

  • Solve numerical questions daily , especially from previous GATE papers.
  • Attempt mock tests regularly from the 3rd year onwards.

    6. Revise & Stay Consistent

  • Maintain short notes for quick revision.
  • Revise important formulas regularly.

    7. Take Mock Tests (After 3rd Year)

  • Start taking subject-wise and full-length mock tests .
  • Analyze mistakes and work on weak areas.

    8. Stay Motivated & Healthy

  • Join GATE preparation groups for motivation.
  • Maintain a balance between GATE and academics to avoid stress.

By starting early and staying consistent, you can secure a top rank in GATE despite your backlog.

I am actually from BC category but in gate 2025 I put my category as general as my father earning more than 8 lakh so I thought it is like obc creamy layer. Can I submit as a obc in gate 2026

kumardurgesh1802 7th Feb, 2025

Hello Preeti,

Yes, you can apply under the OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) category in GATE 2026 , provided you obtain a valid OBC-NCL certificate .

Understanding Your Category for GATE:

  • Since your father's income is above Rs.8 lakh , you belong to the OBC-Creamy Layer and cannot claim OBC-NCL benefits in GATE 2025.

  • However, if your family's income falls below Rs.8 lakh in the future and meets other OBC-NCL criteria, you can apply under OBC-NCL for GATE 2026 by submitting a fresh certificate issued within one year before the exam.

If your category status changes, ensure you correctly select your category while applying for GATE 2026 and upload a valid certificate.

I hope this answer helps you. If you have more queries then feel free to share your questions with us we will be happy to assist you.

Thank you and wishing you all the best for your bright future.

Mitali Sharma 7th Feb, 2025

Hello

Apply as OBC for GATE 2026 :

OBC Creamy Layer : If your family's annual income exceeds Rs 8 lakh , you are considered part of the creamy layer and are not eligible for OBC reservation benefits.

Non-Creamy Layer : If your family's income is below Rs 8 lakh , you qualify as non-creamy layer OBC and are eligible for reservation benefits.

If your father's income remains above Rs 8 lakh, you still fall under the creamy layer and cannot claim OBC benefits for GATE 2026.

However, if the income drops below Rs 8 lakh in the future, and you meet other eligibility criteria , you can submit as OBC (non-creamy layer) in subsequent years with the proper certificate.

hope this helps you .

What can be the cut off for ee gate 2025

Vanshika Agarwal 4th Feb, 2025

Predicting the exact GATE 2025 EE cut-off is difficult, but based on trends, experts anticipate it to be between 28-32 for the general category. OBC-NCL/EWS might see 24-27, and SC/ST/PwD around 20-23. These are estimates, and the actual cut-off depends on exam difficulty, test-takers, performance, and seat availability. Focus on scoring well above these predictions for better admission chances. Check the IIT Roorkee website and individual institute websites for official cut-offs after the exam.
