NIT Rourkela: PepsiCo, Coca Cola, Honda, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Bajaj are some of the major recruiters at NIT Rourkela, where the number of offers so far in this placement season have already crossed last year’s mark of 700, says official.
According to Prof. BB Biswal, placement cell head at NIT Rourkela, the campus, which has a strength of 1365, witnessed footprints of major sectors like software, IT, automobile and instrumentation in the first phase of this placement season.
“Season 2014-15 has been fantastic till now with huge participation from all the vital sectors. However, a slump was recorded in the Power, Telecom and Metal sector. Last year close to 700 offers were made throughout the season, but this year we have crossed that mark in December itself. Also, we have already reached 63 companies visits compared to around 85 last year,” Prof. Biswal says.
According to Biswal, sectors such as instrumentation, IT, analytics and automobile have been dominant in the hiring scene since the start of the session. Also, the campus is seeing a surge in power, construction and infrastructure sector in the current phase of this placement season.
“National level placements have dominated the offers from abroad even though the number of international offers as well as their salary offered has increased. Many global giants have opted for campus hiring for the first time this year. The year has also seen increase in the number of ‘Fortune 500’ companies visiting our campus,” he says.
The placement official has revealed that a number of new companies have entered the ongoing hiring activities at the institution. Many internship offers have been made, most of which are from large corporations. Students are getting new roles, an increase in average remuneration and higher average joining salary, he says.
“Several Start-ups and several Consulting companies are also offering good roles, higher pay and better career growth. Students are getting opportunities to work with top-level management and be part of major decision-making process. This provides a students with wide exposure, which freshers don’t, generally, get in established companies,” says Prof. Biswal.
Over 60 companies have visited the campus so far this year, with many of them being big names across the sectors. NIT Rourkela is expecting the number to cross the 100 mark this year. The major recruiters at NIT, Rourkela are as follows:
Oracle Apps, Cloud, Financial Services
Honda Two Wheelers
Larsen & Toubro,
‘Make in India’: still ‘upcoming’
The official says it will take some more time to incorporate ‘Make in India’ in the NIT placement process. However, he adds, more manufacturing companies are expected into the scene in year 2015.
“Right now there has been no big impact. Effect will be felt as and when new projects come up. Though some of the projects have been already implemented, it is too early to feel any impact. Manufacturing activity needs to pick up first. Nevertheless, hiring by manufacturing companies will expectedly increase and cater to the talent demand towards the latter half of 2015,” he says.
According to Prof Biswal, students are showing preference for new age industries like e-commerce as compared to traditional hotspots involving core-Engineering services. The major reason behind this switch being higher average salary, better work conditions and better locations offered by the emerging industries.
“New-age job profiles like data analyst, associate, consultant, business analyst, etc, are being readily accepted by students. In fact, over 650 students appeared for the interview conducted by an Analytics company,” he says adding, “The preferences, however, vary with regards to the candidates personal interests”.
C-TIIR: A help for start-ups
NIT Rourkela encourages students to set up their own companies by extending funds and other support to the students. C-TIIR (Center for Technology Innovation and Industry Relations) provides office and lab space to the students.
“Startups and companies from anywhere can request to collaborate with NIT Rourkela. This partnership will provide them with infrastructure to set up their facilities here and avail the benefit of a pool of some of the brightest engineering and scientific minds in the country,” Prof. Biswal says.
