Placements 2015: 880 students get offers from top recruiters, says IIT Madras
IIT Madras has concluded its first phase of campus placements with a total of 880 students getting final job offers from top firms including Flipkart, Reliance, TVS, Tata Motors, General Motors, Goldman Sachs and ICICI Lombard. The first phase of Campus Placement ended on December 19, according to the placement officials.
A total of 295 domestic and international companies participated in the recruitment process. The institute conducts its annual placement in two phases- December and April. A total of 1,360 students from across different courses had registered for the first phase of campus placement this year.
Prof Babu Viswanathan, Advisor, Training & Placement, IIT Madras, said “Numbers for this phase have almost matched last year’s total numbers, when a total of 263 companies visited the campus to recruit 905 students in both the phases.” Second phase of campus interview for this season will be conducted in the April, 2015, he added.
According to the placement office, as many as 75 students have received get multiple job offers during the placement process which began on Dec 1 and concluded on Dec 19, 2014. As many as 61 students got 2 offers, 9 received 3 offers, 4 received 4 offers and 1 of them got 5 offers, he said.
The highest domestic salary clinched by students was Rs 34 lakhs with a couple of such offers. The highest foreign salary offered at the campus was as high as USD 1,29,500.
Start-ups, e-commerce companies top recruiters
This year’s trend suggested that start-ups and e-commerce companies lead the recruitment scene, many of which visited campus from all over the country, says official. “There was a significant increase in the number of offers made by start-ups and e-commerce companies,” Prof Viswanathan said.
Placements in start-ups have accounted for 13% of the total number of students placed from IIT-Madras. A total of 65 start-ups recruited from IIT Madras products with as many as 122 offers in more than 75 profiles.
Sector-wise statistics: rising interest in R&D
The sector-wise statistics reveals an increase in the number of students who opted for R&D as career option with as much as 13% students opting for this profile as compared to 2% in April 2014. Accroding to the placement office, as much as 27% students got placed in Core-Engineering and a similar share of students opted for Information Technology domain.
Highest number of offers making companies
In terms of the highest numbers of offers, Cognizant Technology was on the top with 36 offers, followed by Ola Cabs and Flipkart with 29 and 19 offers respectively.
