Placement 2015: NIT Silchar has recorded more than 90 percent recruitment in the first phase of this campus placement season, with a total of 369 offers made by 72 National and International companies at the campus so far, says official.
“The placement season has been excellent. We have been able to achieve more than 90 percent placement till date. We had a mass recruitment by IT Industry players like TCS, Infosys, IBM and L&T Info Tech,”says Dr. Nalin B Dev Choudhury, Faculty-in-charge, Training & Placement Cell, National Institute of Technology, Silchar.
TCS, Infosys, IBM, L&T Info Tech, BhramHos Aerospace, ITC, Maruti Suzuki and Honda were among the top recruiters at the campus. Of 500 students in current B. Tech/BE batch, as many as 430 students participated in the campus placement this season, says official.
“Apart from that, big financial corporations like Goldman Sachs, Oracle Financial Services, HDFC were major recruiters this year, recruiting students from all the available branches”, says Dr. Choudhury.
At NIT Silchar, mostly multinational companies came up with job offers this year. Unlike other premium institutes, Start-ups and E-commerce companies were not the major players in the placement process at this institution.
“All the recruiters were private sector companies. Start-ups and E-commerce companies were not major recruiters. MNCs, including Flour, Daimler, Honda, Oracle, etc., came up in big number during placement activity. Other major recruiters were Kirloskar, Fiat, Godrej & Boyce”, the official says.
According to Dr. Choudhury, the recruitments from core-companies were significantly high this year. “The ‘Make in India’ concept definitely helped the companies to grow, which in turn increased our placement,” he says.
A number of students at NIT Silchar prefer job in Business Analysis field, which comes under new-age job. However, a few companies came up to offer such jobs at the campus, says official.
“Business Analysis is a preferable job for our students but the Analytics companies were not high in number. Only MuSigma and AQ visited our campus. However, Core sector jobs are also preferred by our students,” he says.
Campus environment hardly conducive for start-ups
For the students, who seek to go for entrepreneurship, don’t have the appropriate environment at the campus due to lack of commutation and geographical isolation, the official informs.
“The campus has a Start-up Incubator and Full Function Entrepreneurship cell, but due to lack of commutation and geographical isolation from Pan India, the environment is not very friendly for start-ups,” says Choudhury.
As per NIT Silchar placement cell officials, the average annual package offered to students is Rs. 4 LPA and highest annual package is Rs. 9.5 LPA during the campus placement. Below is the department-wise placement report:
Computer Science and Engineering:
CSE has already achieved 100% placement in Core sector jobs, with highest package offered at Rs. 35 LPA by Work Applications, and average salary of Rs. 6 LPA.
Electronics and Communication Engineering:
ECE has seen 76 percent of the batch strength getting placed. Highest package of Rs. 9 LPA was offered by BhramHos Aerospace. Besides, electronic giants like Philips, Nokia, Reliance Jio were among the major recruiters this year, offering an average salary of Rs. 5 LPA.
According to NIT Silchar, due to sudden pause of campus visit by PSUs, the placement this year is totally based on private sectors. ITC, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Daimler Commercial Vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra, BhramHos Aerospace, TATA Motors, TATA Hitachi, Siemens, etc. were the major recruiters this year. A total of 60 percent students have been placed in IT sector and 24 percent in core sector jobs. The highest package was offered by ITC at Rs. 9.5 LPA and average salary was Rs. 5 LPA.
The placement scenario of Electrical Engineering also faced serious problems due to lack of PSUs visiting the campus. Private sector companies like Emerson Power Networks, M-Junction, Tata Power, KEC International, L&T and JSW showed high interest in recruitment for Electrical Engineering. Their highest package was Rs. 6.5 LPA and average package was Rs. 4.5 LPA. A total of 60 percent students have been placed in IT and 17 percent in Core-sector companies.
Civil Engineering department had a fantastic placement year. Although there is a sudden pause of campus visit by PSUs, many private companies came up for the placement. L&T, Flour, SPCL, KEC were the major recruiters. Their highest package was Rs. 6 LPA and average package was Rs. 5 LPA. From this department, 50 percent students have been placed in IT sector and 60 percent in Core sector.
Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering:
This department has completed around 100 percent placement. Around 30 percent of students have been placed in Core companies – like Siemens, SKF, ABB etc., and the rest of the students have been placed in IT sector.
