Lok Sabha passes IIIT-PPP Bill 2017; confers 15 more IIITs status of national importance
Bachan Thakur, 27 Jul 2017, #JEE Main

Lok Sabha has passed Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) (Public-private Partnership) Bill, 2017 wherein 15 more IIITs have been granted the status of national importance. The bill has been passed with a view to develop new knowledge in Information Technology (IT) and to provide manpower of global standards for the IT. This move comes after the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given its approval for the introduction of the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2017 in Parliament in February this year. The bill may become an act or shall come into force once the Central Government notifies it in the Official Gazette.

Earlier in 2014, as per the Indian Institutes of Information and Technology (IIIT) Act, 2014, as many as 4 IIITs were conferred the status of institutes of national importance. The institutes given the status of national importance in 2014 are - IIIT-Allahabad, IIIT-Gwalior, IIIT Design and Manufacturing Jabalpur and IIIT Design and Manufacturing Kancheepuram.

Thereafter in the year 2015, the Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Kurnool was bestowed upon the status of institute of national importance. After these institutes become the institutes of national importance, they will become eligible to bestow degrees on the students directly.

With the Lok Sabha passing the IIIT-PPP Bill 2017, the total number of IIITs with the status of national importance have become 20. It must be noted that out of the total 23 participating IIITs of in JEE Main, only 3 IIITs have not been given the status of national importance. The three institutes with the status of national importance are Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bhagalpur, Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bhopal and Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Surat.

The Union Cabinet in 2010 had approved setting up 20 IIITs under the Public Private Partnership (IIIT PPP). However, these institutes did not have the provision of providing formal degrees to the students at that time. So far, before getting the status of institutes of national importance, the IIITs used to run on Public Private Partnership wherein these institutes were set up, managed and provided financial assistance by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
