E-commerce companies are leading recruitments at IIT Roorkee campus placement even as 110 companies visited the premier Engineering institute with 532 offers so far in the ongoing placement season.Reviving sentiments:With start-up companies and new-age e-commerce companies making a beeline for talents at the top engineering college, placement officials of the institute said that this year’s placement season has got a better pace than the last year.
“So far, we have 532 offers and approximately 110 companies have visited the campus. Compared to last year, the number of companies visiting the campus has surely gone up which is a positive sign for us,” says N.P. Padhy, Professor-in-Charge, Training and Placement, IIT Roorkee.

Padhy also claimed that the highest package offered so far this year at campus was Rs 1.8 crore per annum by an international company and Rs 34 lakh per annum by a domestic company.
Earlier in last week, two Computer Science students of IIT-Delhi were reported to have received annual pay packages of Rs. 1.42 crore each by social networking site Facebook.
Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Facebook, Schlumberger and Goldman Sachs are among the top recruiters at IIT Roorkee campus so far. However, a number of start-ups have also shown keen interest in IIT crop this season.
“This year, we have seen more number of start-ups actively participating in the campus recruitment process. They are also offering higher packages in order to compete with our regular visitors and lure the students. In fact, start-ups and E-commerce companies are among the top most recruiters this year, Padhy said.
Domestic start-ups are looking towards expansion and continuously relying on IITans in their pursuit to meet this goal. According to official, IIT Roorkee with about 1,700 student strength and 1,600 students participating in the placement process, is not reluctant in collaborating with India-based start-ups in regard to campus selection session.
“There are many budding India-based start-ups that are looking to expand and hence are quite interested in going for campus recruitment especially to institutes like IITs. IIT Roorkee has, on its part, also tried to rope in such companies this year to the campus and we have succeeded at some level in doing the same. We also believe that although International companies and offers appeal more to the students, but talent from the IITs should also go towards building our Industrial sector,” says Padhy.
E-commerce companies and emerging tech start ups, according to Prof Padhy, are attracting more students than the previous years. But, he adds, many students are still interested in core Engineering companies and they are lapping up offers from long-time recruiters.
“New age jobs in the IT sector surely carry a charm as they offer high initial packages and also carry a scope for growth. But then, core Engineering still holds its own place and students who are actually interested in such fields do opt for core companies despite the fact that the packages offered are not as comparable. In fact, this year, we have invited core companies in our campus on the initial days itself along with the big IT giants in order to give meritorious students a chance to pursue a career in their core field," he said.
According to the placement officer at IIT Rorkee, many students have also opted out from the placement process to pursue their entrepreneurial ambition and the institute is providing a better atmosphere to develop entrepreneur skills of the students.
“Our campus promotes students to develop entrepreneurial thinking and to create and implement new ideas. We have an Entrepreneurship development cell in the campus which holds sessions and counsels the students about the same," says Padhy.
The placement officer, however, claimed that such students will again have a chance to participate in the placement process if they fail to take off, as IIT Roorkee offers deferred placement opportunities for such students.
“We have a clause in the placement policy, known as deferred Placement in which some students can opt to sit for placements after 2 years, in order to give them time to try and set up their own start-up," he said.
