The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the IIIT PPP Bill, 2017 thereby declaring the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) as institutes of national importance. Now all the 15 IIITs coming under the purview of this bill will be accorded a statutory status and can award degrees to the students pursuing academic courses conducted by them. Check the details of the bill below and its implications for students.

The IIIT PPP Bill broadly covers the following points

  • The existing Indian Institutes of Information Technology in Public Private Partnership will now be 'Institutions of National Importance”

  • They will have the power to award degrees with the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or Master of Technology (M.Tech) or Ph.D degree as issued by a University or Institution of National Importance like the IITs.

Presently, the IIITs are set up, managed and provided financial assistance by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). In the quest to develop skilled workforce with an aim to meet the rising demand of the industry, students from IIITs will have an edge as now the students will receive formal degrees from the institutes. The IIIT PPP Bill, 2017 is unlikely to have any financial implication on the institutes.

The grant of a formal degree by the IITs in Information Technology, Engineering or Ph.D will enhance the prospects of all students who will graduate from these institutes in their chosen career while enabling the institutes to attract good students to develop a strong research base in the country.

All students irrespective of irrespective of gender, caste, creed, disability, and domicile, and ethnicity, social or economic background can apply for admissions at these IIITs

In December 2010, the Union Cabinet had approved the setting up of 20 IIITs under the Public Private Partnership (IIIT PPP). However the institutes did not have provision for providing formal degrees to the students
