With close to 210 institutions, Madhya Pradesh has a well-defined presence in technical education with a good mix of institutes of national importance, deemed, public and private universities. Mechanical, Civil, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering are the most offered branches by the institutes in that order.
In Top Engineering Colleges in Madhya Pradesh 2014 rating this year, IIT Indore has gone one rung up the rating ladder from AAA+ in 2013 to AAAA, while two other institutes of national importance, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) and IISER, Bhopal are rated as AAAA, the latter being a new entrant. Publicly-funded institute - ABV IIIT, Gwalior has also enhanced its rating to AAAA, primarily on account of its research productivity and a very good cut-off rank. Established players such as IET, Indore and SGSITS, Indore continue to dominate. A good number of private affiliated colleges such as Medi-Caps Institute of Science and Technology and IES-IPS Academy at Indore dominate in the list of preferred institutes for students.

Private universities such as ITMs have also emerged prominently in the state. However, nearly half of the engineering schools have just average quality, and have little industry interface. And the state system has a tough job ahead to bring them on par with the good institutes with funding and assistance.
