Silk technology is a branch of textile engineering. It deals with the technology of producing silk from various sources such as worms and other artificial sources of silk which includes various chemicals. Silk is a popular fabric material and its demands are always on the higher side. It is a natural protein fiber, some part of which can be woven into textile material. The entire production process of silk can be divided into several steps which are typically handled by different entities. Extracting raw silk starts by cultivating the silkworms on Mulberry leaves. Once the worms start pupating in their cocoons, these are dissolved in boiling water in order for individual long fibres to be extracted and fed into the spinning reel. The students are mainly taught about the properties of the fabric, manufacturing process, dyeing and treating the material and convert it into the finished product, ready for the market. After completing the program, the students can work in the textile industry, fashion and apparel industry, silk manufacturing units among others.
