Q. JEE Main will now be conducted twice a year in online mode. What difference do you think this will make in the life of an aspiring engineer?

Ans: It is a boon in disguise for an aspiring engineer. Students get two chances to appear in the examination with the best score considered. He/she gets three months more after appearing first time in January, for removal of weaknesses and consolidating preparation along with board. There is no extra coaching involved since coaching covers up to second attempt in April.

Q. How do you think the preparation should be done for the online examination to be conducted. What strategy should the students follow for preparation? Similarly, how will you change your strategy to prepare the students for this mode of exam?

Ans: Since JEE Main syllabus is almost same as CBSE Class XI and XII, the preparation of JEE Main and Board can go hand-in-hand. Student must take mock tests in CBT mode i.e. online. Students can practice at home or at authorized computer centres to be announced soon free of cost. For students of rural area, NTA is in process of establishing a network of test practice centres to enable everyone practice computer based papers before actual examination. From the third week of August, students can use free of charge computer centres at identified schools/engineering colleges on Saturdays/Sundays. Syllabus, question paper format, languages and fees all will be same and will not change. Students must develop conceptual application, increase the speed and accuracy by taking mock tests at regular intervals.

Q. Would you advise the students to attempt both the January and April examination or concentrate on just one attempt?

Ans: Students are advised to appear in both January and April examinations of JEE Main 2019.

Q. What would you advice the students who want to start preparing for JEE Main 2019 now? What is the time table that students should follow?

Ans: Since students are already in Class XII, hence their board and JEE Main preparation of topics of Class XII must be done simultaneously.

Time table should be planned in such a way that each week 30% of time should be utilized in revision and preparation of Class XI and JEE Main syllabus progressively. All three subjects should be prepared with almost same time and attention devoted to each of them. Short to the point notes and formulaes and concepts at a glance should be used for quick revision just before first attempt in January and second attempt in April. At regular intervals mock tests should be taken to assess the preparation, strengthen weak topics and to increase speed and accuracy.

Q. What books should they follow now? Kindly name some books subject-wise.

It is advisable to join established reputed coaching institute where the study material is prepared by experts in the field considering all aspects of highly competitive examination like JEE Main.

Q. What is the best method to study according to you? Also, which of the topics will you suggest as important?

Ans: Following points must be borne in mind while preparing for JEE Main.

Time management: Proper planning is most important for timely preparation and dealing with study pressure. By now, serious students must have evaluated their preparation or must have been informed about the same by their teachers. So, this is the time to consolidate your preparation and ensure that you do extremely well in the actual JEE Main exam.

Equal focus on all subjects: All the three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, are equally important. So, divide the time of these crucial remaining months aptly between the three subjects. Major focus must be on the topics of Class XII boards, and then revision of class XI topics must follow. This will help the students perform well in their pre-boards as well.

Planned schedule: Prepare a chapter-wise and topic-wise revision schedule. Create short notes, and list all formulae and points to remember. Flag tricky questions and their solution. This will help in quick revision before the examination.

Simultaneous preparation for board exam and JEE Main: Majority of the topics of JEE Main are also covered in board exam. Hence, it is recommended that one must prepare for both the exams simultaneously. Students must practice all NCERT problems, while brushing up topics for JEE Main. Solving board level problems first and then raising the level of problems to JEE Main in any topic is advisable. This ensures simultaneous preparation for both, boards and JEE Main. Every entrance exam is designed with a particular goal. The syllabi may look similar but the pattern and level of questions differ in some way or the other. So, students cannot afford to give less attention to any one of them. Adequate attention must be given when preparing for JEE Main.

Solving only NCERT books may not be sufficient to crack conceptual problems asked in entrance exams. Practice as much as you can. That will help in strengthening all important concepts. For JEE Main, many students tend to think that if they prepare for JEE Advanced, it is enough for JEE Main. But this is not correct.

The syllabus of class 11th and 12th contributes about 45% and 55% to JEE Main respectively. When you are preparing all chapters of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, stress should be given on the following important topics.

Mathematics: Quadratic Equations and Expressions, Complex Numbers, Probability, Vectors, Matrices in Algebra; Circle, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry; Functions, Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, Definite Integral in Calculus.

Physics: Kinematics, Gravitation, Fluids, Heat and Thermodynamics, Waves and Sound, Capacitors and Electrostatics, Magnetics, Electromagnetic Induction, Optics and Modern Physics.

Tip: Practicing quality problems is the key to success in this subject. If concepts are clear, then this subject becomes all the more interesting.

Chemistry: Coordination Chemistry and Chemical Bonding in Inorganic Chemistry, Electro-chemistry, Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium, Mole Concept in Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.

Q. How should students schedule their preparation?

Ans: Strategy of preparation in the last 6 months should be practice, practice and practice. The last 6 months must be used maximum for problem solving with understanding of concept involved, improving on time needed to solve a given problem, identifying the weaknesses and strengthening them. This time should be utilized to consolidate one’s preparation by focusing on problem-solving and overcoming the weaker areas.

Quick Tips to Crack JEE Main

  • Having familiarity with the pattern of exam will make it easier to crack.

  • Time Management is crucial to score more marks in JEE Main.

  • Learning one’s strength and weaknesses and improving upon them will help secure a better rank in JEE Main.

  • Aspirants must practice mock tests in online modes to develop self-confidence.

  • Maximum number of problems should be solved in order to develop a sound confidence level.

  • Proper training for online mode of answering the exam is important

For a 3-hour paper with 3 subjects, generally students tend to give 1 hour to each subject. But, it is advisable that they give 40-45 minutes to the section that they feel most confident about, and then move on to second subject and then to the third. In the remaining time, unsolved questioned may be reviewed. This would help in in based on their preferences creasing the attempting rate. However, students may develop their own strategy.

Q. What are some of the important things that the students should remember during the examination time?

Ans: I have listed down some important do’s and dont’s for the examination.

Do’s for JEE Main

  • Read the entire question paper carefully in the first 5-10 minutes.

  • Attempt easy questions first. Choose sections that have less risk and more gain.

  • Double check before registering your response on computer.

  • Practice JEE Main online mock tests at regular intervals.

Dont's for JEE Main

  • Don't start from question you don't know.

  • Don't get upset if any section is tough. You can score in other sections.

  • Don’t guess if you have no idea about the concept involved in a question.

  • Don’t be nervous if you find the paper tough, since it is the relative performance that counts. Hence, put your best analytical mind to work, it will take you ahead.

  • By several mock tests online (computer based test) make yourself comfortable with computer if you are not adequately trained for the same.
