Freshman Induction Programme at Vel Tech - After recommendation by AICTE, Induction cum Acquaintance (IcA) programmes have been gaining importance in many institutions around the country. Vel Tech initiated the a freshman induction programme four years ago and is still following it.
Vel Tech's IcA aims to provide new and insightful dimensions of engineering and career opportunities for new graduates. Over the years, the programme has created deep interest amongst the students by motivating them to pursue engineering, therefore, reducing the number of dropouts to a commendable extent.
By introducing new skill oriented courses, Vel Tech provides a necessary platform to make them as student engineers. It has been taking a series of concrete steps in adopting CDIO curricular framework and has introduced an ‘Introduction to Engineering’ course for Freshman Engineering (FME) students after having become the first member from India in CDIO worldwide initiative in 2016.

The programme of IcA has been designed with 30 events scheduled for a span of 3 weeks, to enable students achieve the required level of knowledge and skills for their necessary development. It is administered to ignite the potentials of students and build their confidence for successful transition from school to college.
Vel Tech's freshman induction programme covers the breadth of the student experience and includes an academic induction to address the skills required for a degree and a university induction which covers student support within campus and access to student services. This helps foster positive relationships with peers, faculty and staff in the college.
Induction activities also help the faculty to find out students' conceptions and experiences of learning during this period. It allows to know their views about the particular discipline.
The Freshman Engineering division coordinates formal induction arrangements in which all academic and supporting departments contribute by organizing events that exhibit their specializations. It helps to showcase the excellence that Vel Tech wants to deliver and the success, it desires from its students. This promotes and creates an environment for retention, which is a prerequisite for attainment, graduation and future success.
In 2016, an introductory course vis-à-vis CDIO Standard 4 ‘Introduction to Engineering’ that includes engineering learning experiences and introduces essential personal and interpersonal skills was implemented for Freshman Engineering (FME) students.
The unique course focuses on students to develop prototype model-based engineering solutions with broader themes like Environmental Conservation, Energy Conservation, public safety and Waste to Wealth as these were given as project work.
Earlier, in 2015, an exclusive CDIO workspace was created within the campus with isolated Conceive and Design space and integrated Implement - Operate space.
The timetable was made such that a team of students in a section spend 6 hours a week in the CDIO engineering workspace equipped with necessary hand and power tools, sufficient 3D printers and staffed with skilled technicians to assist the students in implementing their projects.
With such experiences, freshman students were able to develop many products and win awards by participating in various projects in reputed institutions of National importance including IITs and NITs.
