Environmental Engineering is concerned with effective application of various scientific and engineering principles for the protection of population from adverse environmental factors as well as protection of the environment by reducing waste and controlling pollution levels. An environmental engineer learns to design, construct and maintain proper waste management system for habitation. The job profile of a professional in environmental engineering is also including analysis of possible health hazards in the environment due to various factors. With tremendous development of economy in the present era, environment pollution poses a serious threat and here in comes the role of environmental engineers.

The protection of the environment is closely related to other ecosystems. To protect the environment from destruction, a definite and dedicated knowledge- based institution is needed. Many renowned institutes and colleges across the world have been engaged in introducing various courses for the protection of the environment. Internationally, many developed nations and organizations like UN and UNESCO.

Dan Quayle, former Vice President of the United States rightly said, “It isn’t pollution that’s harming the environment. It’s the impurities in our air and water that are doing it”. If you are really interested to protect the environment; implement scientific knowledge to design systems that control pollution and protect public health, then Environmental Engineering is the perfect course for you.

Curriculum

The curriculum for Environmental Engineering is primarily designed to orient the aspirants towards the proper implementation of technology in the field of environmental protection. It includes subjects such as Engineering Graphics and Design Hydrology and Municipal Hydraulics Engineering, Geotechnical & Hydro geological Engineering, Water & Wastewater Engineering, Air Quality & Pollution Control Engineering, Industrial & Hazardous Waste Management, etc.

Higher Education:

Seeking a job after graduation is exclusively a choice of an Environmental Engineer. After completion of graduate degree in Environmental Engineering, excellent higher studies options are available in India and abroad. To pursue a postgraduate degree course in Environmental Engineering, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (BE/B.Tech) in Environmental Engineering, from an AICTE-approved institute, state/central university or institute created under an Act of Parliament.

Renowned institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur and IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi offer the postgraduate technical degree (M.Tech) in Environmental Engineering. An engineering graduate may pursue specialization or can choose an internship programme as per his/her interest.

Job prospects:

The Scope for the environmental engineers, both in India and abroad is immense because this discipline requires people from diverse backgrounds, including chemical, biological, thermal, radioactive and mechanical engineering. In addition, professionals from various sectors like process engineering, environmental chemistry, water and sewage treatment, pollution prevention, waste reduction management are required on a large scale.

Job prospects for environmental engineers in various segments, including research centers, NGOs and government departments are increasing day by day. Professionals who have M.Tech degree are in demand in various committees engaged in the study and analysis of environmental risks. Professionals with PhD in environmental engineering can apply for teaching jobs in colleges and universities. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India also recruits environmental engineering professionals for various posts through UPSC. Many private corporate firms like AECOM, MACTEC, UEM GROUP, Kalpan Hydro Company, Goodrich Corporation, IDS Group, and Dresser-Rand India Pvt. Ltd also hire environmental engineers for various project requirements. At the international level, UNO also requires environmental engineering professionals for various projects.
