College of Engineering, Trivandrum was established in 1939 and is one of the oldest engineering colleges in India. Model Engineering College was established in 1989 by the IHRD as a self financing college with a fair degree of autonomy to provide higher quality of education. Now 108 Engineering colleges are functioning in Kerala. NIT Calicut with 954 seats, including 47 in Architecture is one of the most reputed institutes in the State. The NIT also has 30 seats each in Engineering Physics and Biotechnology.
Among the 141 institutes admitting through the Kerala-CEE, most of the student intake (approx. 85%) is in five disciplines: Electronics & Communications (11,106); Computer Science (8,630); Mechanical Engineering (7,917); Electrical & Electronics Engineering (7,378) and Civil Engineering (6,894). Two other disciplines have a fair share of intake: Information Technology (2,928), and Applied Electronics & Instrumentation and Control (2,098 seats). Automobile Engineering, Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering have 420, 300 and 296 seats in all. Production, Aeronautical and Biomedical Engineering disciplines take 240 students each year.
College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram; TKM College of Engineering, Kollam; MES College of Engineering, Kuttipuram; and Government Engineering College, Thrissur all have more than 500 seats each.
Students can gain admission in Kerala engineering Colleges through any of the following routes:
1.CEE or Kerala Common Entrance Test conducted by the Government of Kerala: The candidates can target 49,200 seats across 141 different engineering institutes in the State through this test.
2.AIEEE: One needs to appear for AIEEE to gain admission in the prestigious National Institute of Technology, Calicut. A total of 907 undergraduate engineering seats are available here.
3.ISAT or the IIST Admission Test is conducted for admission to B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering (60 seats); B.Tech in Avionics (60 seats) and B.Tech in Physical Sciences (36 seats)
4. IIT-JEE for admission to Indian Institute of Science Education and Research’s (IISER) 5-year integrated M.S programme. However one may also get admission directly under the KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana and IISER science aptitude test. Eligibility for taking the IISER test consists of scoring above the cut-off marks in 10th and 12th for State/Central Board Examinations for INSPIRE fellowship as prescribed by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India
Candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary Examination, Kerala or an equivalent examination, with 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Bio-technology/ Computer Science/Biology put together and 50% marks in Mathematics separately, are eligible for admission. Candidates having Three year Diploma in Engineering awarded by the Board of Technical Examinations, Kerala or equivalent, having 50% marks in the final Diploma examination, are also eligible for admission. However, these Diploma holders are not eligible for admission to the Engineering courses offered by Kerala Agricultural University.
