Aircraft Manufacturing and Maintenance is a branch of Aeronautical Engineering. This particular field of engineering deals with the design, construction, development, testing, revamps, inspection and everything related to the manufacturing and maintenance of an aircraft or its components. The task of an Aircraft Manufacturing Engineer is to design and construct the aircraft and that of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is to control, maintain and repair of the specific parts of the aircraft or the entire aircraft.

Aircraft Manufacturing & Maintenance needs in depth knowledge, expertise and extensive research to develop new mechanisms. So it requires proper application of engineering principles and technical know-how to design to construct and maintain a plane for safe and smooth flight. In terms of output value and people employed, the aerospace industry ranks among the world’s largest manufacturing industries.

Curriculum:

The curriculum for Aircraft Manufacturing Engineer is primarily designed for those interested in pursuing a career in the aircraft maintenance industry. The curriculum provides an opportunity to arm with different mechanical, electrical, electronic knowledge and other technical skills related to aircraft manufacturing and maintenance engineering.

 

Eligibility:

Candidates who wish to pursue Engineering in Biotechnology should have passed Higher Secondary Board Exam from a recognized board in India with aggregate 50 per cent marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Core Subjects:

  • Aerodynamics: It provides knowledge about how air moves around things. The rules of aerodynamics explain how an airplane is able to fly.

  • Avionics: These are electronic systems, used in aircraft, artificial satellites, and spacecraft for easy navigation, communications, management and display of multiple systems.

  • Flight physiology: It is a physiology that deals with conditions encountered by humans in flying, mountain climbing, or space flight.

  • Navigation: It is an area of study that puts emphasis on the process of monitoring and controlling the movement of an aircraft or vehicle from one place to another.

  • Astrodynamics: It is used to describe the Newtonian mechanics application to man-made objects in space, such as rockets and spacecraft.

  • Computational fluid dynamics: It is a branch of fluid mechanics. It uses numerical analysis and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows.

Higher Education:

Aircraft Manufacturing and Maintenance Engineering is not exactly a degree but a license course approved by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Institutes which are approved by DGCA can provide this training course. After the completion of the course, DGCA conducts a license exam. If you are able to successfully clear the license exam, you will receive the certificate of Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Certificate (BAMEC).

IITs conduct undergraduate courses in Aeronautical Engineering of which Aircraft Manufacturing and Maintenance Engineering is a part. After the completion of the course, you can also appear for Associate Membership of Aeronautical Society of India (AMAeSI). The qualified students are also considered eligible for M.Tech Applications of IITs, Birla Institute of Technology Ranchi and Madras Institute of Technology.

Indian domestic air traffic is expected to cross 100 million passengers by FY2017, compared to 81 million passengers in 2015, as per Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA). India is among the five fastest-growing aviation markets globally with 275 million new passengers.

 

India is a suitable place to start your career as an Aircraft Manufacturing and Maintenance Engineer. Under section 5A of aircraft act 1934, the parliament of India has also empowered the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to implement various provisions for manufacturing, operation, sales, import and export of aircrafts. The country has become one of the prime centers of attraction for the developed countries of the world because of its potential in engineering workforce for manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO). Besides private airlines, many corporations namely, Air India, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, Air Sahara and Air Deccan are engaged in providing efficient services and able to generate high revenue. Notably, aircraft maintenance engineering is not a degree, but a license course. Institutes which are approved by the DGCA can be eligible to start this course.

 

The aviation industry really needs aircraft maintenance engineers to control and provide maintenance and repair services for safety ride and landing. In addition, most of the sophisticated aircrafts need high degree of technical knowledge and competence. For that purpose, the aviation industry actually requires aircraft engineers for manufacturing, designing, assembling and repairing of aircraft components.
