AIEEE, IIT-JEE: Mantras for last-minute preparation
PREPARING for IIT-JEE or AIEEE nowadays needs utmost concentration throughout the period of preparation. It has been observed in the past few years that the students are opting for a two year period of time for their preparation, which means they start their preparation after the class 10th Boards. This trend can flourish because of the option that students need not give the class 10th Boards anymore.
The period of preparation is long, of course, and just like a marathon race the speed, consistency and discipline are the most required attributes for this “sadhna”. Devoting a sizeable period of time for self study in a systematic manner is the most important strategy for success in these exams. Good and competent teachers could help you go a long way, but they are no substitute for hard work.
Second important aspect that I observed in the previous years is that the students should clear their doubts as soon as possible after the self study but most of the students are shy about asking small things which matter a lot in the long run.Now I would simply make the things in binary mode, what to do and what not in the entire preparation, which is discussed in two boxes ( See boxes alongside) and spend the rest of the column on telling you what to do in the last lap.
One month to IIT-JEE
The time is too less now. Students are advised to look back upon the common mistakes they have made throughout their preparation and try to figure out their weakness in terms of subject or topic which will help them to make their test-taking strategy while writing their JEE. Also if human errors like calculations, remembering values etc are to be removed then students must practise the same.
The IIT-JEE is likely to be stressful. The students will have to take two 3-hour papers one after the other. To prepare for such a situation, students must create exam-like conditions and take a few mock tests and make sure that they follow the same time frame. Students are also advised to go through past years’ questions just to tell themselves that the papers in the past have not been that difficult. Students are advised against trying to solve a whole lot of problems at this stage. They must also avoid doing complicated problems.
Relaxing, having good sleep, eating healthy are also very important. Students are also advised to estimate the time taken by them to solve the questions so that they could know how many questions can be easily solved by them during the one-hour duration of the subject or three hours’ duration of the exam which will again help them in deciding their test taking strategy. Also they could improve upon the question selection and prioritization for the same. Again solving mocks would be the most efficient tool.
One week to IIT-JEE
Now the time left is too less. Students by this time must have studied everything, revised, taken mocks, done their strength and weakness analysis topic -wise as well as subject-wise. Now students should not even dream of studying anything new. They should now start focusing on revision of important formula steps, assumptions etc.
They should also focus on deciding their test-taking strategy for the JEE. Students now know which areas they are weak and in which area they are strong subject-wise so they should have a mindset of deciding which subject to start with and also make an estimate, how many questions should be right or they should attempt to get the rank which they are thinking of based on previous year analysis available on IIT websites etc.
