JEE Main 2020 - HRD Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has announced that JEE Main 2020 will be conducted on July 18, 20, 21, 22 and 23. The examination had previously been postponed due to COVID-19. JEE Main 2020 admit card will also be released soon. The authorities have closed the facility to change the exam centres of JEE Main 2020 on May 3 along with the application form correction facility. National Testing Agency (NTA) had closed the process of JEE Main application form 2020 on March 12. JEE Main is held by NTA twice in a year for admissions to 31 NITs, 25 IIIT and 28 GFTIs. The entrance examination will be conducted as a computer based test. JEE Main 2020 is a computer-based examination where Paper I is for B.E/ B.Tech and Paper 2 is for B.Arch/ B.Plan. It is to be noted that a section of JEE Main Paper 2 (drawing) will be pen and paper based.
What is JEE Main?
The full form of JEE Main is Joint Entrance Exam Main. It is the national level entrance test for admissions to the undergraduate engineering, architecture and planning programmes offered by 31 National Institutes of Technology, 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology and 28 Government Funded Technical Institutes. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency twice a year - January and April where the better of the two scores are taken into consideration. JEE Main 2020 is also the screening test for 2.5 lakh students who have qualified to appear for the JEE Advanced for admissions to the seats in 23 Indian Institutes of Technology.
JEE Main 2020 changes
- JEE Main 2020 (second session) will now be conducted on July 18, 20, 21, 22 and 23.
- Due to COVID-19, the authorities had opened the facility to change previously selected exam city of JEE Main 2020 till May 3, 2020.
- JEE Main application process 2020 has seen some major changes. Also the application fee has been hiked. The offline payment mode (E-challan) has been discontinued from this year. Candidates applying for April session have to upload their class 12 marksheet/ admit card.
- NTA has announced an important point for JEE Main 2020 registration. Candidates who have registered for January but not appeared for the exam will be able to only apply as a fresh candidate. Such candidates cannot use their JEE Main January credentials even if they have paid for the exam but have not appeared.
- JEE Main Exam Pattern 2020 has been revised with major changes in the number of questions and marking scheme. In JEE Main Paper 1, candidates have to answer only 75 questions (25 each from Physics, Chemistry and Maths) including five numerical questions per section which do not carry negative marking. The total marks are now 300 for JEE Main Paper 1 in 2020 while they were 360 earlier.
- JEE Main Paper 2 is now separate for B.Arch and B.Plan aspirants. B.Plan students have to answer questions on planning while B.Arch students have a drawing test (pen and paper based). Maths and aptitude are common for both B.Plan and B.Arch. The total marks have increased to 400 for Paper 2 from 390 marks in the past years.
- JEE Main 2020 exam centres have been reduced to 233 from 264 in 2019.
- NTA has set up a dedicated JEE Main Query Redressal System (QRS), to answer queries/grievances by candidates.
- Candidates can use the 1.5 lakh Customer Service Centres to apply, download their admit card or result of JEE Main in case they have no access to internet.
- B.Plan aspirants have new eligibility criteria - Candidates from any stream who have studied Mathematics as a subject in class 12 are eligible to apply.
- NTA will provide an additional time of 1 hour to all the PwD candidates with benchmark disabilities and physical limitations to write. Such students have to produce a certificate from the Chief Medical Officer/ Civil Surgeon/ Medical Superintendent of a Government health care institution as per proforma given by the authorities.

JEE Main 2020 Pre-exam Overview
JEE Main Application Form 2020
The online JEE Main registration is over whose last date was extended till March 12, 2020. The JEE Main 2020 application form for April session was released on February 7. Candidates who have already registered for the January session of JEE Main 2020 can skip registration and directly login using their credentials of the January session. Candidates can also make use of the common service centres where a nominal fee will be taken from the candidates for the common service centres.
Steps to Fill JEE Main 2020 Application Form
Candidates can follow the given steps to fill the application form of JEE Main for reference purpose. Before filling the application form, candidates should have made sure they met the eligibility criteria as specified by the authorities.
Step 1 - Registration: The first step was JEE Main Registration 2020 by submitting their personal, contact details and input a password of their choice.
Step 2 - Filling of JEE Main Application Form: In the next step, the candidates had to select their paper for the examination. personal and contact details were auto generated from registration. Education details had to be entered in this stage followed by parents income details.
Step 3 - Uploading of Documents - Scanned photograph, signature and class 12 marksheet/ admit card were required to be uploaded as per the NTA specifications.
- Photograph - Should have candidate's name and date (on which the photograph was taken) mentioned below. File size must be 10 KB - 200 KB and the dimensions 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm in JPEG/JPG format.
- Signature - Candidate's signature (scanned) in blue/ black on a white paper between 4 KB to 30 KB. The dimensions should be 3.5 cm x 1.5 cm and in JPEG/JPG format.
- Class 12 marksheet/ admit card with a file of 50 KB to 500 KB in JPEG/ JPG format
Step 4 - Payment of Fee - The required application fee of JEE Main 2020 had to be paid by the candidates. Payment was online only through SBI MOPS, ICICI, HDFC, Syndicate Bank payment gateways as well as Paytm services.
Step 5 - Print Out of Acknowledgement Page - The candidates had to print out four copies of their acknowledgement page for future use.

JEE Main Admit Card 2020
NTA will release JEE Main 2020 admit card for the April session in online mode. Candidates can download it using their application number and password/date of birth. Candidates have to carry their admit card to the exam hall on the day of exam along with a photo identity proof and a passport size photo.

JEE Main Mock Test 2020
Test practice centres to access the JEE Main 2020 mock test are in place by the NTA authorities. Candidates could register for these centres to practice for the upcoming examination on NTA website. However, the mock test is also available for download. Candidates can attempt the mock test to know the pattern of JEE Main and analyze their preparation. JEE Main Answer Key 2020
National Testing Agency will be publishing the official answer key of JEE Main in online mode. The correct answers to all of the questions of the examination will be made available through the answer key. The provisional answer key will be open to challenge by the candidates and the final answer key will be later released by the authorities. The authorities had released the final JEE Main 2020 answer key for January session for Paper 2 (January 23) and Paper 1 (January 17). Three questions - 2 from Physics and 1 from Maths were cancelled in the answer key pdf released by NTA.

JEE Main Counselling 2020
Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will be responsible for the counselling of JEE Main 2020. Registration for JoSAA 2020 will be available after the examination process is over and candidates need to register accordingly. During the counselling session, the candidates will be required to select course and institute of their choice and eligibility. The selection should be done in the order of preference. Seat allotment will be on the basis of JEE Main 2020 merit, preference of colleges and courses, eligibility and availability of seats. Around seven rounds will be conducted by the authorities to provide allotment into the B.E/B.Tech courses offered by NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
JEE Main 2020 Reservation Criteria
Candidates who belong to specific categories will be able to take admission under the reservation criteria of JEE Main 2020. To be eligible for the reservation criteria, the candidates need to have the valid documents related to their category.

On the basis of JEE Main 2020 scores, the candidates will be able to apply for admission into NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Along with these institutes, many private institutes and state colleges also accept admissions based on JEE Main 2020 scores. Admissions on the basis of JEE Main 2020 scores are also accepted by some states such as Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Nagaland.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQs) - JEE Main 2020
Question: If I have failed in my class 12 in 2017 but passed in 2018, can I still appear for JEE Main 2020?
Answer:
No, as the first attempt is 2017 so you will not be eligible to apply for JEE Main 2020.
Question: What is the state of eligibility? Is it the same as domicile?
Answer:
The state of eligibility is the state where a candidate has studied his/her class 12 or equivalent. So it has got nothing to do with the domicile of the state to which the candidate belongs to.
Question: What is the state of eligibility for the Improvement Candidates /Institution Abroad/NIOS?
Answer:
The state of eligibility in case of improvement candidates will be the state in which they first attempted their class 12 and not the state in which improvement was written.
In case of candidates from institutions abroad, the state of eligibility will be based on the permanent address mentioned in the passport.
In case of NIOS candidates, the state in which the NIOS study centre is situated will be the state of eligibility.
The state of eligibility is not applicable for the candidates belonging to Nepal /Bhutan/Foreign/OCI/PIO.
Question: What is the qualifying mark for JEE Main?
Answer:
Actually there is no qualifying marks for JEE Main. Everyone who writes the exam will get a rank. The cutoff marks of JEE Main released by NTA are for students eligible to write JEE Advanced.
Question: I am diploma holder. Can I apply for JEE Main?
Answer:
Diploma holders can appear for JEE Main Paper 1 only to qualify for JEE Advanced. They are however not eligible for admission through JEE Main Paper I.
Question: I have made a mistake in my JEE Main application. Shall I fill another form?
Answer:
NTA has also announced the dates for corrections in JEE Main 2020 application form. Dates for JEE Main application form correction were changed to March 13 to 16 for the April session. However, NTA had reopened the application form correction facility from April 1 to May 3, 2020.
Question: I forgot to mention my name and date below the photograph? Will I be able to write the exam?
Answer:
The candidates will not be penalised for uploading the photograph without name and date. Therefore, you will be able to attempt the examination. However, the candidates are requested to follow the proper guidelines.
Question: How many times in total can a candidate appear for the exam?
Answer:
Each candidate can appear for JEE Main for three consecutive years. Since the new format has two attempts, candidates can appear for a total of six attempts going by the rule book.
Question: The scores will be on the basis of the candidate’s performance. But with multiple sessions, how will the score be equalized? What will ranks be awarded on?
Answer:
Normalization will be used to equalize the scores from multiple sessions. The formula has been explained in a detailed manner by NTA. It will be done for each session and for each subject.
Question: Who will set JEE Main 2020 question Paper?
Answer:
National Testing Agency will be responsible for the question paper of JEE Main this year
Question: Does class 12th marks matter in JEE Main?
Answer:
Class 12th marks don't matter for writing the entrance test but they matter during admissions as it is mandatory to have 75% in class 12 or be in top twenty of your board (65% for SC/ST).
