AIEEE: Odisha HC quashes the new admission guideline for NIT-R

The Orissa high court has quashed the new guideline being followed by NIT-Rourkela in admitting students from AIEEE rank list . The high court had earlier ordered a stay on the admission process while hearing the case. The Central Counseling Board (CCB) - AIEEE for the year 2012 has been constituted with Director, National Institute of Technology Rourkela, as its Chairman.

The norms of selection currently being followed were found to be bad in the eyes of the law and hence the HC comprising of Ms Justice Sanju Panda has cancelled the clause 3.3.1 of the information brochure issued on June 15, 2012. Students were made aware of the said norm just before they were to submit their choice of subject and institution list. The timing of application of the said clause was found in violation of the Supreme Court verdict that procedure for admission cannot be changed after the declaration of results. The apex court had earlier issued orders to the authorities that a compendium of the entire procedure of selection, admission be made public prior to the actual process.

The HC has directed NIT-R to consider admissions as per the earlier guidelines. This judgement comes in the wake of resentment by students and their parents for the new guideline which was formulated to give a national character to the NITs. The students fear that they will be debarred from taking admissions to NITs close to their home towns on account of this new regulation.
